The recommended dosage is “4 capsules daily with a meal”. So does that mean 4 capsules at one meal, or 4 capsules spread out through the day, taken with food?
optygen. Is that like EPO?
I take it all at once with breakfast. And no it isn’t like EPO.
I take mine all at the same time…
All 4 in the one sitting, or you could just eat lots of beetroot.
I don’t think you would want to eat beetroot to get the same effect. Rhodiola Rosea is a root, but it is not beetroot. (which is where they get one of the active ingredients, rosavins)
Do any search for performance enhancing effects of dietary nitrates in beet juice and you might be surprised as opposed to glycoside compounds which you are referring to.
I know what the effects of nitrates are. Your comment seemed to suggest eating beets was a direct replacement to optygen hp. Which it is not. Nitrates=vasodilation, smooth muscle relaxation. Rosavins- I’m less clear about but they seem to be involved in increasing/modulating neurotransmitter activity. Two different class of compounds, different modes of actions, different effects. Might as well take both, especially if you’re an athlete who suffers from anxiety or depression.
As a past user of the Optygen products and its interesting side effects and I qualify on a personal basis, the actual cost benefit didn’t stack up for me especially since actual proven benefits still seems to be mainly marketing. Agree on the different physiological effects of rosavins with its supposed effects on cortisol control and vasodilation with nitrates and potentially taking both but having done Optygen, I’ll stick with beet juice. Do you have personal experience with Optygen? I would be interested if you experienced some of the side effects I did? Apologies if this is a hijack of the original post as it wasn’t intended to grow into a detailed discussion around the “science” behind the compounds. I blame YOSA…8)
Any off the shelf beet juice? How much daily?
Biotta seems to be the most popular/available, I think it comes in 16 ounce bottles but being in Oz it’s a bit hard to come by so I generally juice up a mix of apples and beetroot to 250ml (8 ounces) about 2-3 times a week and before a race. I’m no expert by any stretch so perhaps others on ST will be more qualified with information. Apologies again for the beet hijack.
There is a concentrated form of beet juice with the same amount of nitrates (did the quick calculation with the trusty periodic table) for those of us who don’t want to down 500ml a day. It’s not on store shelves as far as I know, but it was significantly cheaper than biotta. It can be found here http://beetit.com/ (great name). As for Optygen I ended up just using a Beta Alanine supplement (a main ingredient of opty with some significant research cred). It was much cheaper and the dosage recommended in studies was higher than the amount in opty (2 gram vs. 1 gram i believe).

“A” meal. Not with meals.
I dunno, if you can’t understand the dosing instructions, maybe you should be taking it?

I believe that the research done was 500 ml beet juice a day for 6 days prior to a bike TT.
You can buy the Biotta on vitacost.com, and they will do buy one get one 50% off every once in awhile, by far the cheapest I’ve found it.

You probably mean “you SHOULDN’T be taking it”. #hecklefail
appreciate the tip on vitacost.com…pretty good deals. One question…why does everyone do the Biotta as oppose to the other Pure Organic 32oz versions? It seems like those have much more concentrated and more servings for approx same cost? In other words even if you used 5 servings a day of those you’d still get 5-6 days a bottle as oppose to 2 servings (3 total beets) in the Biotta?
If the question was directed towards me, I have no clue. The biotta tastes decent enough where maybe I’m scared of new things or something.
fair enough…just wondered. Got a few bottles of each brand to “test” out

Biotta - 16.9 oz bottles. I start drinking 1 bottle a day (split in two serving AM/PM) 10 days before a race and drink an entire bottle race morning. You can find it at Whole Foods. I’d definitely stock up when it goes on sale. It’s $6.49/bottle but I’ve found it for $5.49/bottle on-sale, then I just get a couple cases. I like the taste of Biotta, it doesn’t taste like dirt which I’ve experienced with fresh juiced beets at Whole Foods and other brands.

But yes, fail.
