Open water swimming in Northern NJ?

Does anybody recommend any good (i.e., preferrably free) open water swimming holes in Northern New Jersey (i.e., Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, and/or Passaic Counties)? I am training for Lake Placid and will be looking to hit some open water come Easter (if warm enough) or Memorial Day.

I’ve heard of Splitrock in Rockaway as a possibility, but also heard that they started cracking down on swimming there last year and were giving out $1500 fines.

Try Lake Hopatcong.

What about in Mountain Lakes?

I think you have to be a resident of Mountain Lakes to swim there.

That’s my understanding as well.

Good question. I looked into this also before, Bergen County in particular, to no avail.

Let me know if you find one. I don’t think the Hudson would be a good option.

It has been years but I have swam in Round Valley (Hunterdon County) and the water was crystal clear. I believe it is a reservoir they let people use, but I could be wrong. If still allowed definitely worth a try. Probably be more like Lake Placid than Lake Hopatcong which isn’t so clear. Provided some links below. Good Luck.

I used to be a lifguard at Spruce Run Res just up the road from Round Valley. Both have rather large swimming areas. You might be able to cut a deal with the guards to be able to swim just on the other side of the ropes. There are also one or, ore organized ows’s at Round Valley. There might be info on paceracing.org

One thought is to go with someone with canoe or kayak and swim besides it. This should get you out in open water with no troubles. That’s how I did it. The other cool part is I believe boating crafts with no motors or extremely small ones are only allowed so it was very calm and safe. I couldn’t believe how clear water was.

Bumping this thread to see if anyone has any new ideas, I live 20 minutes from spruce run and round valley but both have seemed to get pretty strict over the years from what I’ve heard.
I think I may go the canoe route and convince a few friends to have a nice morning fishing but would be easier to find a place to go on my own.
