Advice/suggestions/experience for open water swim training in the NY/NJ area. My cousin lives in Westchester County and he tells me that local lakes are filled with wetsuit wearing/buoy dragging swimmers during the spring and summer.
Does anyone do this? What are the rules/regs regarding state parkland in NY/NJ? Does anyone else do this? Is my seat too high?
I think you should have no trouble finding a place to swim, I think maybe give it a week or two so the water temps can get above 50. If you are familiar with north Jersey, up near the Greenwood Lake, NY in the same area, or in west Jersey, you should be able to find lakes to swim in. As far as state parks and such, I think you may find them a little restricted, like having to swim in a guarded area, so that may be a problem. Here in PA, we have plenty of open water but yesterday the lake I swim in (Harveys Lake) was 52 degrees. Nice to stand in after a hard run, but probably shitty to swim in for very long. The local parks all ban swimming in those lakes (except designated swimming areas), so we swim in lakes that are surrounded by houses and not run by the DNCR (Pa’s park service).
The Hudson Valley Triathlon club swims May thru October, Monday/Wed/Fri evenings at Williams Lake resort in Rosendale, NY. We also have 4 sprint tris (June-Sept). www.hvtc.org
