I really doubt that you read this, as I doubt that anyone on ST would be so damn inconsiderate as to steal 600 Hammer Gels. Your taking our Hammer Gels that were supposed to go on the Bike and Run. Your stealing of the Gels cause me to move a key voulenteer off of the course away from setting up our run course and off to search our bike aid station for boxes of Hammer Gel. We rushed around - not able to do other things we COULD have been doing to take care of to support the folks who where there to honestly have a good day - that you very may well have ruined.
The fact that someone would come into transition and steal 600 Hammer Gels sickens me.
I didn’t want to say anything … but since you have taken the lead. Justice in that he may actually eat some of it … I’m not sure if it will make him blind though

Probably he or she will return 599 unopened boxes after tasting one.
We do have one “suspect” - there was a car that was parked where it should not have been. It was there all night. Security was keeping an eye on it and no one was in it, nor in the park that we could find. Race AM the car moved from one spot to another and I again was announcing that the car would have to be moved out of the park. Minutes later the car was gone, shortly after that we were getting loaded up to get aid stations sent out. We got the bike stations on a truck and sent it out. Putting the six run stations together we found that all of the Gels were gone. The other items there were Heed, Pre-Mixed, Water by the gallon, ice, cups, salt pills, fruit, trash bags, trash cans, knives and the other stuff for the stations - the only thing of value there in a “re-saleable” package was the gels in boxes of 100.
The car DID have tri stickers on it and was certainly owned by someone who was into the sport. We did have police run the (out of state) plate. The registered owner was not a participant.
Despite this you guys did a great job in putting on a great race. I know some were pissed that certain aid stations were without gels, or pepsi ;-), but as is the cardinal rule…have what you need yourself, and count on nothing. Having done tons of races, I enjoyed the race and playing at a good race in my own backyard was a real pleasure. I’m sure you’ll work hard to sort out the very few issues, but it ranked up there with any of them, and the course was why one should race. It was a very challenging, and well done course, especially given I know the restrictions you faced. I’ll be back…if you’ll have me. And my dog won’t even eat the damn gels…
Sounds like that guy went through a lot of trouble to score some free gels. Came in from out of state, camped out in his car to survey the scene and get into position. Then when the time was right he made off with the motherload of gel? If only he set his sights a little higher who knows what he could pull off.
Not a huge deal to us participants. The aid stations had plenty of bananas, water, electrolyte capsules and Heed. Plus, Chip announced the theft before the race, so if you had some gels in your transition bag, you knew to BYO.
Chip, did I hear correctly that someone also took the mile markers for the run? If so, that is just plain malicious.
Sorry to hear that,
Sounds like the thief’s were targeting Tri’s this weekend. Took my two kids down to Tampa for the IronKids event and they had both their bikes stolen sometime early in the morning before the race. Made for a long morning watching the kids cry in their cereal. One of the ladies from Iron kids was nice enough to help find an extra little beach cruiser they could use so they at least still got to participate. Started the search for replacement road bikes today. A lot harder then you would thing to find reasonable road bikes for an 8 and 10 year. Just plain sucks that there are people out there that will steal about anything.
