Omega-3 in Diet

Anyone out there try to get a good amount of Omega-3 fatty acids in their diet? See any improvements?

There are all sorts of health benefits, just wanted to see if others have tried a regimen and noticed a difference.

Most of the single elements of a diet won’t let you see much difference one way or another. It’s an overall healthy, well balanced nutrition, over a significant period of time that will allow you to see improvements, between when you started and where you are, and you’ll have no way to assess if it’s nutrition, or nutrition and training, or just training, or just being happier in life etc. Lots of components…every person that will tell you ‘oh I saw great improvements with omega-3 fatty acids’ is just telling you how good the placebo effect is

I take omega 3 pills and have always wondered if they actually do anything. I do think they help me with joints/tendons and overall health, but hard to say.

Don’t laugh but one thing that made me start to feel good about taking them was actually the use of them by my dog (yes, this sounds strange). He was having skin issues and starting to get a thinner coat. We didn’t know why, and realized we had stopped giving him fish oil pills. Well, after about a week of fish oil his coat looked noticeably different, and we even got several comments from others asking what we do for his coat. I know, I know it’s just a dog…but it makes me feel better about them working.

Definitely agree that fish oil will give you a nice coat of fur.

Interesting, I’m not laughing. However the Seinfeld episode where Kosmo takes a dog that has his same cough to the Vet to diagnose and fill prescription for medicine. “Can’t trust the Doc’s, they are quacks, but a Vet- they have to be good enough to diagnose a fish, dog, bird!” (Quoted by Kramer, not me for all the MD’s out there)

Thanks for the info, very brave of you!

I feel like they help me.

Omega-3 Wikipedia page …a wealth of info. In summary, “The potential health benefits of n-3 fatty acids supplementation are controversial.”

Omega 3’s are vital in neuroplasticity, reducing inflammation and a host of other ailments. There is a mountain of information available. Here is one of many studies showing the effectiveness of Omega 3’s vs. traditional NSAID meds for treating inflammation (and the associated chemistry). I’m happy to provide more information if you are interested. The stuff is pretty affordable just make sure you get “Triglyceride based” and not “Ethyl Ester”. FYI, Dr. Maroon works extensively with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What’s the difference between them?

Better absorption, utilization and most importantly less contamination. Nordic Naturals is probably the best one out there with the most published research IMHO.
