Oldest person to finish an IM? Madonna Buder?

Sister Madonna Buder finished IMC yesterday at age 79. Is she the oldest person to finish an Ironman?

No. Robert McKeague finished IMH in 2005 at the age of 80.

Does this person have to have done the entire course?

LOL! But still McKeague is older.

I didn’t want to bring that up.

Didn’t the great Bill Bell do Hawaii at age 82?

Not unless you want to be banned

I only do what the good lord tells me to do.

Didn’t the great Bill Bell do Hawaii at age 82?

He attempted it at age 80 or 81 but didn’t finish.

Here’s a good article on Bill.

I didn’t want to bring that up.

Is this the triathlon’s worlds worst kept secret?

Bill Bell did have the record at one time. It was either '99 or '00 IM California. I was there and it was a very memorable finish. The Marines ran in formation singing cadence to motivate him. His speech at the following days awards was even better!

I think an 82 year old Japanese guy finished IMNZ a few years ago (2006 or 2007?) in about 16:30 or so. His 80 year old wife missed finishing by about 4-5 minutes from memory.

As I’m blonde and lazy, someone else can check

Shhhhh…you dont want stigmata now do you? The lord acts in mysterious ways, and his messengers deliver their message in many ways.

I remember Walter Stack did Hawaii in like 1981. No time limit then and was over 24 hours, went home and slept, came back and finished… I thought he was like 84. Could be wrong. Monty or Slowman will remember.
I know, not what you meant, but he was quite a story.
Just looked it up. 1981, He finished in 26:20. Couldn’t find his age, just over 65.

Pardon me for asking, but what secret are you referring to? I wont tell anyone…

Bill Bell finished IM Calif in 2000. Not sure of his age, but it was the record at the time.
I was finishing as he was headed out on the run but didn’t have any “Power Bar” logo (must have sponsored him). He borrowed my Power Bar visor and wore it the entire race.

The record was IM Cali in 2001. He finished close to midnight with a bunch of Marines bringing him in. I worked the finish line that year.

You might want to try googling “Ironman California 2001”…
