Okay, Mr. Demerly, about this WalMart/UnderArmour stuff

I was curious about the comment yesterday regarding Under Armour knock offs at WalMart. Stopped by and couldn’t find anything in the usual mess on the racks. Store help was no help. What’s this stuff look like and do they have tights as well, or is that just not a WalMart kind of thing?

I’ve got a white crew neck top which I like, especially since it cost about $13. If you can’t find it at Wally World you may try Academy Sports if you have one near by. There you can find a slightly higher priced knock off.

I’m sure the UnderArmour is a little better in quality but not $30 better.

I’ve seen cheap UA-like stuff at Target— I think it was by Champion which makes pretty good stuff.

They are labeled as Champion.

I suspect it shows up with different labels in different places; I’ve seen Starter stuff like this:

Also similar stuff with an Athletic Works emblem like on these shorts:

I suspect Champion & Jerzees labels show up on it sometimes as well.

cotton is rotten!

what I’m looking for is a pair of tights. I got under armour heat gear tights last near and was thinking about another pair, but I’m cheap and don’t feel like dropping $50.

You ar eright, I went and checked. It is Starter.

could be your local outlet does not carry the stuff for some reason. the ones in this area have several racks of those items…t-shirt cut, tank cut, long sleeve, and square cut shorts. i have not seen any tights or long shorts here.

i’ll fess up to owning several items in that line purchased at the local stores and they have turned out to be functional and quite the value.

I picked up a few poly/nylon mix UA style tops from the closeout rack at Target last weekend cheap- i think merona was their house brand. One of few times not being supersized has paid off in clothing purchasing!

If you’re just looking for cheaper polypro type shirts, Campmor, a store up in northern NJ has tons. I’ve bought all my various base layers from them for the past six years. Prices are between $6 and $20. Here’s a link to the long-sleeve and short-sleeve shirts available (best stuff is Hind or Duofold).

Just remember, the performance of the fabric and its expense are directly correlated. Companies like Pearl Izumi or Patagonia (as an example) don’t just make more on profit on thier apparel. They spend a lot more on high quality fabric that outlasts and out performs the cheaper stuff. I guess my point is you get what you pay for.

jtaylor, with all respect some of the less expensive items work just as well. I don’t have much money to blow on my endurance habit and could never afford Pearl Izumi or North Face stuff in my wildest dreams. I"ve purchased some very nice running wear at both Wal Mart and Target, including some of those long sleeved Starter underlayers you guys have been talking about and they’ve worked just great.

I have invested in a couple of good turtlenecks and a pair of running tights for the days when temps and windchill are bad (I live in IL so it gets cold). But the majority of my stuff is Champion, Starter and the like. Might have to put on one more layer with these, but I see no reason for any of us to pay $40-50 for a stinkin UnderArmour tee shirt.

Just my 2 cents.

It’s all gone. The summer stuff is gone and might be back next year. I bought two of the looser fitting t-shirts and they worked a treat.

I have had both the inexpensive stuff from Walmart (which I am currently using) and the expensive stuff from the name brand companies and prefer the Walmart goods. From a price, quality and durability standpoint, at $9 for a short sleeve and $12 for a long sleeve I could afford throw away more than a couple of the inexpensive shirts before I get to the price of an expensive one if I needed to do so. However, that has not been the case, the Walmart stuff has outlasted just about everything else I own. YMMV.

Do you have TJ Maxx in your area? I have purchased almost all of my under armour stuff there at about 1/2 the reg price. I have bought both men’s and women’s. You have to be willing to stop by often to check it out, thought. Not something guaranteed to be in stock.

I have both kinds of stuff and the quality of the more expensive stuff is better. Try a cheab brand mock turtleneck and then an underarmour one. The underarmour ones are much warmer.

TJ Maxx, Marshall’s both have underarmour stuff.

I think Nike bought the Starter Corporation, specifically for distribution in Wal-Mart. Anyone know if the shirts and shorts are Nike products re-labeled?

This is true.

but I see no reason for any of us to pay $40-50 for a stinkin UnderArmour tee shirt.

yeah, I see your point, fair enough. probably true for running t-shirts, shorts - anything like that… I guess I was thinking more about the apparel I rely on to keep me alive: wrong thread.
