Okay, I give up

How do you get a new tire onto a tubular rim for stretching? What amount of force is appropriate/safe, and how should this force be applied?

If it matters, it’s a tufo S22 training tire, and I’m trying to stretch it on a zipp 999. Actually, just the front so far, when I couldn’t get it on, I didn’t even try the disc.

Help?

Stick your foot in the tire and gently pull it tight. Some folks think that is a bad idea, but it will prestretch the tire out. People will tell you you will damage the tire that way, but I do it all the time. Then put the valve stem in the the rim and slowly move each hand around the rim seating the tire. Try to pull all the slack out early on the mount, or it will be harder to get it on the rim. A spoked wheel is easier than a disc as you can stretch the tire while while mounting by putting your foot inside the rim.
Always a good idea to not have glue on the tire before premounting. Sometimes it takes a lot of finger strenght to get the last few inches, but it will fit on there. Then pump it up to 100+ and leave it an hour or so prior to remounting and gluing. G

On my first attempt I got blisters in my hands!!! so you’re not alone…I also pre-streteched with the foot method and that did help…when i got the tyre on eventually it’s best to pump it up and leave for 24 hours as that WILL help when you finally mount it…

Thanks Sperera, I can always count on you to answer late night questions! Ahh, the benefits of a global forum…

I wrap the tire around my back/shoulder, then stretch by pushing out with my forearms and hands. This gives the tire a greater ben radius.

I also use the foot method.

I sit on the ground with my knees up to my chest and put the tire around me. Then I push out with my arms, legs, back all at the same time. Caveat: I’m a solid, broad 6’1" 185 pounds, so its easy for me to stretch the tire this way. If you’re skinny, you might hurt yourself

Even still, I sometimes have to use a PLASTIC tire tool with tape on it for that last little pop.

Perfect! This method worked great. And, I’m only about 150, and didn’t have a problem!

Thanks!!
