I am going to upgrade my old Ultegra standard crankset with a compact in preparation of IM Lake Tahoe. Nashbar has a 20% off sale now so it would be as good a time as ever for me to pull the trigger. The only problem is they are sold out of the 6700 Ultegra compact crank with my crank arm length (172.5). I see they have my size available in the newer 6800 which is 11 speed.
Will an 11 speed ultegra crankset work just fine with my otherwise 10 speed ultegra/dura ace groupset? Will performance be affected negatively?
Final questions, I am riding a 2003 Quintana Roo Ti-Phoon. Will I need to get a new bottom bracket, or will the new crank work just fine with my current ultegra bottom bracket (FYI no signs or poor performance such as noise, play, grittiness)?
I am in a similar situation, I have 9 speed dura ace and I’m wondering if I’m ok to use either 10 or 11 speed cranksets… Or is it time to drop a lot of cash and upgrade everything?
the question here is more about the chain width than anything. 11 speed CHAINS are more narrow than 10 or 9 speed. This means that a crankset would fit a wider chain just fine. I have not tried the combo you are asking about, but I can see no reason why it wouldn’t work. I run an 11 speed chain on a 1x10 mtb without issues.
issues that you WOULD have would be taking a 9 speed chain (wider) and putting it on a 10 speed cassette (narrower).
As for your crank swap question, the only thing that matters is the spindle. does the current crank have the same spindle as the new one in both length and diameter? if “yes” then you won’t have any issues.
Thanks, I picked one up! Pretty sick to get a brand new Ultegra crankset for $196! I have been watching “take offs” and “barely used” ones going for near that value (sometimes more) on ebay. Plus this is the newest model… sure it’s 11 speed, but this will make it easier to upgrade everything else in the future!

Sorry to bump up an old thread but did this end up working? I am in a similar boat, Is it ok to run a new 11 speed shimano 105 crankset with an otherwise 10 speed shimano drivetrain?
