Ok... FRIGGIN RIM TAPE! help!

i have a jet 9/disc that i’ve used for a few races and i’m using latex tubes. the rim tape keeps folding up under the tube, then leaves spoke holes exposed… when i air it up, i he tube pops… i’ve gone through 3 tubes already trying to get ready for my race tomorrow!!!

am i supposed to have some electrical tape on the rim also? any advice to keep it from getting moved?

Thanks for any help!

Stan’s yellow tape in the 21 mm width. Buy the big roll and only use that for rim tape from now on. No more problems.

What kind of rim tape are you trying to use? If it’s loose enough to fold up under the tube then it has somehow been stretched as even the non-adhesive rim strips should be a very snug fit on the rim.

If you’ve got a race tomorrow I’d either run out right now and get some good Velox rim tape in the correct width for your rims or if that’s not an option go get some fibre reinforced strapping tape down at the local hardware store run two layers to ensure that your latex tubes at high pressure won’t punch through at one of the spoke holes. Again make sure the tape completely covers all spoke holes and any grommets or sharp edges especially if running latex tubes.

In a real pinch you could run electrical tape over your existing rim strip just to keep everything from shifting around but rim strips shouldn’t be loose enough for that to be an issue.

+1 on Stan’s but that might be hard to find before tomorrow’s race.

Any shop worth having a pulse in also has Velox…problem solved.

Are they C2 width? If so you can’t use standard rim tape, whatever width that is. Hed’s own rim strip works really well. I used mountain bike tape (I think) initially because it was wide. If the spokes are offset they peek out from standard tape.

how about blue painters tape! haha

Packaging tape. Two layers.

The Velox will bunch up as well.

You need the reinforced packing type tape as mentioned. It’s the clear tape with the reinforced strands in it. Cut it to the right width. Put at least two layers on. That should do it.

If I was you I would just get some Veloplugs - yellow. Forget about the strapping tape. For tonight I would just use the rim tape, and put a two layers of electrical tape over it.

Problem solved, Tri On The Run gave me some mountain bike-width velox! Put the hed tape over that and no 'splosions

Thanks for all the help!

I’ve had problems where a bit of moisture in there and the velox adhesiveness goes away pretty quickly and the bunching problem shows up. YMMV. Using any of the other suggestions - packing tape, plugs, packing tape over plugs, single piece tight elastic rim strip works better if this is the issue.

x 2, switched a month ago, not sure why I didnt do it sooner

If you have to use the electrical tape option:
“Super 33+” will stretch the most and provide the best holding force. the more raps you use the tighter the tape will be.

I should mention for anyone else reading this at a later date that if you have a Zipp full carbon clincher rim, that in additional to the Veloplugs you should also put down at least one layer of electrical tape, but preferably two. This helps prevent any carbon slivers from puncturing the tube.
