OK for guys to wear uncovered tights while running?

I’m a guy and I normally wear tights when I run in the cold weather. I don’t wear a pair of shorts over them. However, I recently went on a group run and felt kind of conspicuous. All the other dudes were wearing shorts over their tights. I come from a cycling background, and I’m used to the spandex feeling. But am I being immodest when I wear only tights? Or is this kinda taboo?

I thinks wearing shorts over your tights makes you a Douche-Canoe. Although, I can only guess at the definition of douche-canoe…

i run a lot in winter. i prefer it. i wear tights w/o shorts and i don’t worry about it. on the whole, what you’re describing is more akin to the pool denziens thread; dudes showering in their swimsuits and so on.

Wear what you want to wear, but…

I wear just tights. The shorts-over style just isn’t me. Now, I also wear a longer shirt/vest that covers my bum and meat-and-two-veg so I’m also modest. FWIW, this has been the approach of every serious runner I’ve know since high school (unless, of course, you’re female, in which case you should wear the tights, no shorts over, and a shirt that falls to about your waist).

Why would you wear shorts OVER your tights? Would you wear your shirt over your jacket? You’re an idiot.

Running tights showed up in the early 80’s. I think we should all be over it by now.

The shorts thing looks dumb IMO and really dumb when its -20C.

This thread has inspired me to start wearing shorts over my jammers. Can’t believe it took so long for me to sort that one out.

Who gives a shit. Wear what you want. As long as it is legal.

And, I wear tights over my cycling shorts so I can take the tights off when it warms up but they are pretty light ( or I’ll use leg warmers). When I run, as long as it is a bit above freezing I wear shorts, as it gets cooler I switch to tights - no shorts over top. Gets cooler, thicker tights, no shorts. Cooler still, XC pants, no shorts. Jacket may or not cover junk, don’t care. I want to be comfortable. But, I do wear some kind of undergarment with tights to keep everything from bouncing around.

Only men with bad self esteem are using shorts over tights.

No over tights but yes over compression shorts.

Oh that’s some Strange Denizen material right there.

running + spandex without shorts = douche canoe

Over Easter with the family I was talking about a dog getting loose and nipping at my thigh, ripping a hole in my tights in the process. My brother couldn’t get over the fact that I admitted to wearing tights. Of course he graduated high school in 1980 and is sort of a douche canoe, but there are still a lot of people out there who think guys in tights signifies something less than manly.

What? No. Shorts over tights? What kind of lameness is that?

I assume you are talking about actual running tights and not long underwear. If you are wearing “long underwear” like might be used as a base layer, then I guess shorts over that is appropriate. But actual running tights? No… nothing goes over that.

Shorts over your tights is usually an indicator that you’ve spent too much time on the Under Armour or Nike website choosing your ‘workout outfit’…

Not certain on the “douche-canoe” either, but sounds about right. Shorts over tights is wrong.

This is a bit along the same lines:

Why do high school-aged runners wear compression shorts under their running shorts/uniforms? *I did not run xc or track in high school, but as a 25yo looking back, it looks really, really odd.

Wear a tutu if you want to.
I wear my Fusion tights. I have a couple good ones for training and an expensive one for racing. It’s a very snug fit. I wear it under my 400mile Desoto bibs for IM distance over it. In T2, I just take off my bib and go out for the run.
