OK Cincinati, Why should I move there?

OK Cinci folks, sell your neighborhood to me.

I’ve been offered a promotion at work that’s a really high position in my organization. The problem is, at least with my unfounded and rather rudimentary thoughts of what it must be like to live there, it’s in Erlanger Kentucky (20 miles south of Cincinatti).

I’m a lifelong Californian, never lived more than 10 miles from the beach. Currently living in what I consider the best place in the US to live, in the SF bay Area.

Other than the fact that I could buy a nice house on a few acres in KY and still have a sizable chuck of dough in the bank after selling my house in Walnut Creek, CA, What redeeming factors are there about living in/around the Cincinatti area?

I’m interested in your thoughts on the weather, training areas, winter activities, terrain, tri-clubs, swim venues, etc…

OK - Fire away folks.

Cincinnati is home to rroof and kittycat, two of the ‘bestest’ people all around!

Otherwise, I’m pretty sure that it can’t compete with SF, CA. :frowning:

For the Midwest - Cincy has a pretty nice triscene, good country roads to ride, and several great cycling groups to chose from, I wouldn’t know about the swimming… actually there some decent pools as well.

Like you already noticed the cost of living is the main attractant, but if you have children, there are nationally ranked school systems and a relatively safe environment for raising kids.

Best wishes,

Mark

PM would be best - main issue is if you have a family or single (or married no kids, etc).

Check out U.S. News & World report and/or Places Rated Almanac amongst others for more “non biased” views. I’m not from Cincy either and came here because of work over other similar offers in Florida x2, Wisconsin, Oregon, Raleigh, Connecticut.

So someone there can help you learn how to spell?

It’s Cincinnati, not Cincinatti. C’mon, use the spell check.

Coming from an Ohioan … research where you are going to live. there are very good area on Cincy, but then there are areas where you will get, well, you know where I am going

Avoid areas by the University. The campus is awesome, but it is right in the middle of the ghetto … I mean, security guards walk kids to their cars etc…

On the other hand, there are beautiful old neighborhoods that are 100% safe

It’s not Cleveland…

Well here my opinion, but again it’s just me. I have a love/hate relationship with Cincinnati really. I have a business here that is well establish and have the greatest friends. I have an old house that i love, it wasn’t expensive and I live in oakley, which is awesome for a young active single person. Oakley/hyde park has all I need and I work 5 minutes from home so no traffic.

I am not from here, culturally, this is very segragated and ultra conservative. Being from Montreal, it’s quite different. I don’t think there are enough parks/trails to run that are very near my place (yes i know about east fork and ceasar;'s but it’s 45 min away) However, the more i am here, the more I discover , found the greatest trails recently, still a drive though.

I am from Canada and don’t like winter, cincinnati is tough in the winter. Too cold to enjoy training outside, but not cold enough to cross country ski. Ask my friends, always happy here in the summer but every winter i talk about moving.

It’s not bad, it depends what you like and want. kentucky is even more different, i know there are state parks south of the airport, and silverlake is a great pool in erlanger. Great bike routes and group meeting all kinds of places, lots of bike routes near airport if you choose to live near work. But traffic here is a joke so it’s not an issue.

The airport… BIG frustration. CVG was voted number ONE for most expensive airport to fly out of. i fly all the time, tickets are pricey. Half the amount if you are willing to drive to dayton, louisville, lexington, indy or columbus which all those towns are 60-100 miles from cincy ( great for tri races, LOTS and LOTS of tri’s within 1-2 hours drive)

Does that help? I am not unhappy, i love a lot about here really. I am not 100% convinced I’d want to live here forever, but i can see why people would want to raise a family here:-)

Cinci is awesome if you like race riots & urban sprawl.

Don’t move to Cinci for more money. It’s a bad plan. Don’t leave NorCal.

I’m from Columbus and it’s no paradise, but it’s a way better city than Cinci.

The lifestyle that you will lose is simply unattainable in Cincituky.

Sorry if this is offensive to my neighbors to the south, but this guy is in the bay area and he’s thinking of moving to Cinci. My lord.

I will tone down my initial responce to that uninformed post.

Cincinnati is fine. Just do not plan on pushing the boundries. Very conservative.

As a life long Cincinnatian, piss off.
Apparently you need to live there a lifetime in order to spell it right

Hey shit head. I was trying to tone it down.

It wouldn’t be more money, but I get to take my Bay Area Salary with me if I go. The only thing I would really be gaining is not ever having to make another mortgage payment.

Thanks for the input everyone, except Beavis, you can just piss off pal.

Who do you think you are, gatorade-face?

hey doug have you been to cincy recently? the riots were years ago and even then, it didn’t really affect me where I lived (yes those were bad but still) I have been to columbus a TON, I personnally would pick Cincy over Columbus but that is my preference. i don’t think cincy is what you make it sound. And no, I don’t think it’s the greatest place on the planet , nor the place i would pick to go live if I had to choose all over again but I do think it has some very good things to it.

Is it me just seing the glass half full or what?

Karma…do not underestimate this. Speaking as a native Midwesterner, now Bay Arean, I could never move back. Winter, but more the conservative mindset.

Well said, I like Columbus, Arena District and Short North is cool. But for living Cinti has it way over Cowtown. Hyde Park or Mt Adamas if you are single. Indian Hill, Terrace Park, Marriemont Maderia if you have kids. Stay to the East side IMO.

PLEASE just say no to Northern Ky. It is a different planet over there. Not bad, just different.

What high school did you go to?

I just mentioned to someone that use to live in the Bay Area and is familiar with nati-tucky about your possible move, I told her the particulars and her quote was,“That’s considered a promotion?”. I have to say that if you love the diversity of people, culture, geography, and a wealth of things to do that moving would be a mistake. If your priority is having a big house then Cinci/Kentucky might be geat place for you then.

Remember that Kentucky is the birthplace to one of our best patriots, Larry Flynt
BTW-You live more than ten miles to the beach if you live in Walnut Creek  and Lafayette reservoir does not count. The Creek is a great place though. Best of luck with your decision.

even Paulo liked Cincinnati when he came to visit us:-)

I think this really depends on just how big this job is – if it’s to almost run a top organization w/ 7-figure potential, then sure. If your career can progress nicely here, but is just taking a few more years, then skip it. The SF area is spendy ($3 mil in my 'hood for a home I’d want w/o sizable compromise), but it’ll look 2x as spendy if you leave and look back.

I would never do it unless I couldn’t get comfortably ahead here, and something huge were in Cincy/Detroit/STL, etc. I came to the Bay Area looking for work 15 years ago, found an inferior role to what I had back east, took it, and have only rarely longed for what Northern Virgina offered.
