Congrats on your win, but:
Would you call yourself 2011 ITU Long Distance TRIATHLON World Champion?

Congrats on a great win well deserved. One of few athletes with not just athletic talent but great integrity and intelligence a good role model for up and comers. There is more to Sport than just winning.
I was wondering why you did not race on the new Shiv Tri? and how come the Shiv you rode was allowed by the ITU considering the ITU rules state bikes should comply with the UCI regulations?
Is the Shiv Tri likely to be allowed in ITU sanctioned non drafting events as the Long course champs and World age group champs?
Zoot prototype. Different version of the same shoe that I wore in Canada. Coming to you Spring '13 (probably). It’s a great shoe. Gets better each version.
Really, the Spring of 2013 (not 12)? Is that not a pretty large lead-time for a shoe that apparently is already pretty good.
It’s actually right about par for the course in terms of lead time. If it were a Spring 12 shoe, it’d be ready for market by this point, as Zoot sales reps would be selling it for futures orders right now. We retailers are booking at least 6 months in advance, and in some cases (the big swoosh), we have some orders going in now that we won’t see until September of next year.
It sounds like they keep tinkering, handing out to athletes such as Mr. Rapp, and then collecting that feedback. Once they are happy with that final design, then they can start building out (which, in the case of new shoes, generally will mean some new midsole molds/cuts for the EVA)…then they can start sell through futures, with typically 12-15% overbuild on the futures to have at-once availability.
In other words…it takes a long time for something to go from idea to prototype to sample to something you see at your local running store.

New Shiv Tri is not UCI legal…the Shiv TT without nosecone is.
In 5 years from now, is this race going to be on more people’s radars? Are there going to be more well known professionals such as yourself, Joe Gambles and Michael Raelert showing up to this event? (You mentioned some other pro’s in the conversation with Timothy Carlson whose names were unfamiliar to me…perhaps they are “more well known” to other populations.)
i have nothing to add or ask, just congrats on the win.
note, while looking thru specialized’s bikes this morning, i noticed you were on their front page–Jordan Wraps ITU Worlds.
thanks for all your help and advice.
Would love to know your power/cadence data when you get a chance to look at your file. Very curious to see what the spikes were on the 3 sisters.
Thanks and congrats - you looked so strong out there.
Did you pretreat your tubulars with Stan’s or other type of sealant?

Hence my question the bike he rode in ITU LC is UCI illegal yet it was allowed can someone clarify why? the ITU rule book states the Bikes need to comply with UCI rules “generally” but statement about 3:1 rule.

Would you call yourself 2011 ITU Long Distance TRIATHLON World Champion?
I suppose I have to, mostly because there isn’t a formal declaration of what to call yourself when the race changes format. E.g., Simon Whitfield won the ITU World Cup in NYC the year that it was turned into a duathlon. But it still counts when the ITU tallies his WC triathlon wins.
In other words, let’s say they had changed the race to a duathlon. Technically, I would not be World Long Distance Duathlon champion, because that’s another race; it was in Switzerland this year.
That being said, I probably won’t call myself much of anything regardless. That’s just not me…

The Shiv Tri geometry is not a great match for me. I will probably race a Shiv TT next year. Regardless, though, I wouldn’t have changed bikes with so little time to get things set up and tested. I.e., the bike was ready for athletes only about 6 weeks ago. I don’t think that’s enough time to be 100% sure before a big race.
As far as the ITU/UCI rules, I’m not really sure. Plenty of athletes besides me rode set-ups that do not comply with UCI regs. Nikki Butterfield rode the Shiv Tri. I’d wager almost every athlete had their seat less than 5cm behind the BB. I could speculate on what the real intent/design of that rule is, but the real (and simple) answer is, I just don’t know.

I don’t know. I’d wager if you ran the poll Dan is running in Europe, you’d see some very different results. This race is very much on the radar in France, Denmark, Spain, Great Britain, etc. Just not in the US. As far as whether or not that will change, I wish I knew. I hope so. But I suspect it’s more up to the ITU than anyone. I think it will be as big as they make it.
Did you pretreat your tubulars with Stan’s or other type of sealant?
Yes. But not before this race. I.e., my tires were pretreated. Having cut open old tubulars, the mix I use - 50/50 Stan’s and Auto Slime - stays liquid for at least 6mos; so I pretreated before Canada. And, when I inflated my tires before this race, it was clear that the sealant was still liquid.
Nikki Butterfield rode the Shiv Tri.
I coulda sworn my eyes were playing tricks on me!

80rpm (I did “better” than I thought!) / 301w (315w Pnorm)
It’s hard to pick out the three sisters exactly. It appears that i averaged about 450-500w up each of them (for about 30-45sec), which would make sense based off training data.

It is weird, as I studied the rule book before heading out to Henderson based on a thread here. Essentially it says that bikes will “generally” follow UCI rules. Then they have a diagram that show the seat allowed 5cm in front of the BB and max 15cm behind. This is clearly not UCI rules. AFAIK there was no one even checking bikes at Henderson. They just made me put my helmet on to check the strap.

Jordan is that AVG with zero’s removed or left in? I only ask because that is a pretty low VI and you stated you were surging a lot to try to shake guys.
FWIW…I did see an ITU official at the bike check-in looking at the length of one athletes aero bars. He was explaining that they could not extend past the leading edge of the front tire…the bike in question met that criteria…just barely.
Past the front of the tire? WOW, I would not want to try to ride on something that stretched out. It must’ve handled like crap.
I wonder if they mean only double-diamond frames, and no home-made wheels, aerobars, etc. I.e., “it must be made by a ‘real’ bike company…” Appearance is very important to the iTU, hence the very restrictive rules on uniforms, logoing, etc. I think it is important for making the sport look “polished.” So I can see that, likewise, they’d want bikes that “look normal,” whatever that means…

That’s a very high VI for me. That’s with zeros included. Even when I try to be, I can’t be THAT unsteady. It’s just not in my nature (or, rather, my physiology…). Probably also explains why I can’t drop guys. But I can make them suffer…
