Official Ask Me Anything About iTU Long Distance World Champs Thread

Well, someone asked, so here’s the first reply…

Jordan,
Great win Saturday! I’m glad I made it onto the run course in time to see you.
I was wondering if you would extend your offer for some questions on this race?
What gearing/wheel set-up did you run?
Did you alter your training for this course topo (hills)?
For power do you break the course down by distance, topo or another means?
What was your speed on the run in (miles 68-70)?
What would you have done different to do better?
Thanks in advance.

Not on the bike (because where I live is quite similar to the terrain there), and not really the run either, same reason. But I did run more hilly routes than flatter routes close to home in preparation.

On this course, I had two goals with power:

  1. get in the lead
  2. if I was unable to get in the lead, I wanted to put a hurt on the guys behind; so I ride a bit “punchier” (higher VI than normal) once it became clear that I wasn’t going to drop some guys at “steady” pace to try to break them for the run

I don’t know speed. I find speed to be irrelevant. I rarely look at it. It’s only important for knowing when you are going to get off your bike, which is only important for nutrition.

As far as what I’d change, I don’t know. That’s probably a bit open ended to really answer well.

Congrats, wish there was better race coverage to have been able to root for you.
Are you gonna get a custom jersey with the WC colors on it?
Are you doing the race next year seeing as it is in Spain on July 29th?

Was the different size tubulars (23 vs 21) by choice? Why that configuration?

Out of all of your races, where does this one rank in terms of how proud you are of your result?

Congrats on the World Championship, and good luck in a few weeks in AZ!

I’ve seen Rappstar answer this Q before, yet I couldn’t dig it up. From memory, 21mm on FR due to better aerodynamics on the leading edge. 23mm on back for better comfort; leading edge on rear not as crucial if one has a frame (such as Shiv, P3, etc) where leading edge is “hidden” by seat tube. Surely Rappstar will answer this accurately after he fixes the Challenge Cairns thing.

I think it’s important to defend titles, especially one of significance, so I’m certainly - right now - planning to go to Spain. But I will need to see how recovery is from this effort, to make sure that I can plan well around doing the race next year.

21 is more aero. That’s true on the rear as well, but it’s basically negligible in a bike like the Shiv that shields the leading edge so well. And a 23mm in the back makes a disc a bit more compliant and comfortable.

It was my first chance to actually represent the USA in a race, which was pretty amazing. There’s really no way to describe standing on a podium while they play your national anthem and knowing that you are the reason why. To grab the flag and cross the line is amazing. I’d never gotten to do that before, but it’s quite special. And to do so on US soil is even more of a special thing.

But, because of the odd format, I wasn’t sure that I’d won when I crossed the line, which was a bit weird. I mean, it’s normal for TT racers in cycling, but I think it’s still a bit strange to cross the line and THEN find out if you won. Plus the whole change in format just made it a bit different.

I don’t know that I could rank it. The US is so much about Ironman, that I think this race is less important here than elsewhere, and I think the race is more important than it is made out to be here. But I’m proud to have brought home a world championship on home soil.

What shoes were you wearing? I remember seeing a few threads in the past on how you like to train in some flats and more basic shoes, and was curious how the zoot line stacks up against these. I think you were using adidas rockets, green silence?, pirahnnas/hyperspeeds, gel tarthers, luna racers, etc.

Congratulations on a great race and adapting to the last minute changes!

congrats sir! well done.

how about your swimming? did you change your training routine for this distance?

Zoot prototype. Different version of the same shoe that I wore in Canada. Coming to you Spring '13 (probably). It’s a great shoe. Gets better each version.

congrats sir! well done.

Instead of training for swimming, I sabotaged the weather so the swim would be canceled.

In all seriousness, 4km ~= 3.8km, so I just trained the same way I would for an Ironman swim.

Every time I saw you out on the bike course, you were towing (legally, I might add) Sudrie and Gambles. Did they ever take a turn?

Does having guys “sit in” (in quotes as the draft at 10m is pretty diminished) bother you or do you see it as beneficial to be able to set the pace and when the surges happen?

Congrats again and it was great to meet you.

It was Sudrie and Massimo Cigana from Italy. And, no, they did not come to the front once. I don’t mean that in a pejorative way; I also don’t know that I would have let them. I wanted to eject them, so I was the one surging and setting the pace, which is the way I like it

Also, as an FYI, the draft zone for ITU LD races is 12m.

Thanks for the insight (and the corrections!). That’s right, Gambles was riding with Raelert.

Our family was cheering you from afar, as always.

Best wishes and enjoy!

Congratulations, Jordan. A well deserved win.

You represented the US as an elite. I’m curious as to the support you were provided by USA Triathlon…travel expenses, physio, mechanical…ect.

Really, the Spring of 2013 (not 12)? Is that not a pretty large lead-time for a shoe that apparently is already pretty good.

I don’t have a question but I just wanted to say congrats on the win & thanks for this & the IMC thread as they’re really interesting reading for this tri geek
.

Congrats, Jordan! I love the finish photo of you holding up your son!

Question: I see in the bike pix you are wearing gloves and toe caps. I know the weather warranted that.

a. I thought I had read that toe caps actually increase drag. Is that your thought?

b. Which gloves and toe caps did you wear? as I assume your selection was on warmth but also decreased drag.

Thanks!
