Decided to strengthen core during office hours, got the idea from “The Office”, seems to work pretty well, why not sit on one while being at the office?
The great video of the scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsK6xF0C1p0&feature=related

Thinking you’re going to strengthen your core by sitting on swiss ball at the office is sort of like thinking you’re toning your legs by walking on those ridiculous sketcher shoes…
What’s good about it is that it improves your posture by making you actively maintain posture.
A girl that used to sit next to me used it. She was pregnant and it was supposed to help with her core muscles.
i use one a lot of the time. I had a woman at work tell me she thought it was unprofessional. she was promptly ignored.
at the time i had a large L shaped desk and when i’d go to roll over to another side of it like i was used to in my roller chair I’d almost go flying off the darn thing. did you know they make little set ups for them? http://www.calibex.com/Chair-With-Fitball/zzcalibex2zB1z0--search-html?nxtg=4b6e0a28050e-18F7D9A85FBE1C71
it doesn’t really help me with slouching, though. i can still slouch like a champ on it.

that is awesome!
never knew they existed!
Sitting on a stability/fitness ball isn’t going to strengthen your core any more than by sitting in a normal chair. But if sitting on a stability/fitness ball makes you more aware of your posture simply because you’re sitting on said ball, then it’s a win/win…but the ball doesn’t magically make you sit up straight…you have to do that yourself and as another poster said, you can just as easily slouch while sitting on a ball. Either way, just sit up straight…you can do that in any kind of chair. If you want to work on your balance/body awareness, sit with your feet closer together or even try kneeling on the ball. But then you’re just going to become really good at balancing yourself on the ball, not strengthening your core.

This is inane. If you want to strengthen your core, get up an hour earlier and work out your core. Sitting on a bouncy ball is childish and un-professional. If a junior brought a ball chair to the office, I’d stab it with the scissors.
i use one a lot of the time. I had a woman at work tell me she thought it was unprofessional. she was promptly ignored.
That’s too bad. She was right.

actually, i’m a successful business owner, but now your opinion has been filed in the same place hers was.
“Hi, I’m judgemental and make assumptions about people I know nothing of.”
I’m going to ask for one of those ergonomic adjustable desks so I can stand and work at my computer if I want to.
A lady in my area got one, but had to make a medical “case” for it. I want one simply to burn a few more calories during the day.

This is true. Plus, once you get tired and start slouching you get the added benefit of reinforcing bad posture on an unstable surface.

I was judging the appearance that it presents. I don’t care what you do, if I am considering doing business with someone, I don’t want to see them on an adult version of a kindergarten bounce toy in their place of business.

Actively maintaining posture engage ab muscles, no?
…Still a good thing to have in the office, provides a tool assist with stretches and ab work while sitting through boring conference calls.
Actively maintaining posture engage ab muscles, no?
Not more than sitting in a chair. Just makes you more aware if you start to slouch (which doesn’t mean it prevents you from slouching).
Yeah, there was a The Office episode about this. Very funny.
Then again, we’re multisport enthusiasts and not really concerned with how we look or are perceived by others.
I thought about doing this some time ago but decided it wouldn’t benefit me but more my office mates. They would be laughing so hard everyday that their core muscles would end up be much stronger than mine.

Hmmm. If I move my butt around on my chair I won’t fall off. But if I move my butt around on a fitness ball I certainly will. I tend to engage my core to keep me from falling off of things.
I work at a standing/elevated desk during the day. Love it love it love it. Even on those long run/long bike days. Keeps me from slumping alot and falling asleep. And andecdotally, I feel my recovery alot better since Im not giving the muscles any time to tighten up.
cheers

I found I slouch just as much on mine. I’m too cheap to buy a real chair though so I use it.
I think the scissors response was right, I also +1 for thinking they look unprofessional. I’ve noticed in my experience that the people that like these also seem to like some sort of monitor glare protection device, keyboard wrist supports, ergonomic keyboards, rsi wrist protectors and foot stools for under the desk. I would alos hazard a guess they would have their own mug washed and kept locked in the desk and a plant of some description. I bet the space shuttle has less ergo stuff attached to it than some of these peoples desks.
