Off-Season Fun: Which is better, whirlpool or steam room?

Long time lurker…close to first time poster.

OK. You’ve just finished your swim or spin class or treadmill run and you have 15 min. to spare. Do you:

a) Jump in the whirlpool to massage your muscles after the workout

-or-

b) Hop in the steam room to work up a good sweat and get all the impurities out of your body.

i.e. How to people best like to recover in a limited amount of time?

I’ll lead out and say that I usually like to stretch in the steam room using towels for cover!

Thanks

i’m a steamer myself, and have access to both plus dry sauna. all three are nice, but the steam room is especially hot, with light that filters through the steam. this chases away the winter blues and is totally relaxing, i love it.

Depends on where the best looking women are at the time…

We have a hot tub at the house. Hardly ever gets used. Never been able to stand any more than a few minutes in a steam room.

Jon added something that I didn’t think of. The co-ed steam room or whirlpool.

Now things get interesting.

I was going to have to try to make things interesting with either this thread or the one titled ‘Lube’, …the quarter landed on tails…(pun intended)
.

Not sure about the steam room but I did find an interesting article on the physics of cowtipping.

It’s off-season for me now, but I am still doing triathlons.

After dinner or a light workout I go the the club and do an Executive Triathlon as I like to call them - hot tub, sauna, steam…

Personally I prefer the hot tub for relaxing muscles fast. I bought one for my back porch and use it all the time. The strong jets and bubblers do a great job at beating up your sore muscles, but that’s only if they have a “theraputic” style pool. Many of them are just hot pools at 100-102F and aren’t worth squat. In that case I would find the place with all the hawt chix!

Personally I can’t stand the thought of getting into the whirlpool at my health club while people are going in after their workout without taking a shower.

When I saw someone comming out with his underwear still on under his shorts, I swore I would never use it.

Besides, wouldn’t cooling joints be better than heating them up after exercise?

What benefit does the whirlpool/steam room deliver?

I just built a huge 900 sq. ft. deck off the back of the house over the last month. The gf and I are installing a 6 person spa as well. Can’t wait. I don’t know which is better for you but I do know what I’ll be using. Clothing optional in mine but you must be bathed prior to getting in.

I saw a 1 man-5 woman spa in the paper last week.

Is that the model you bought?

1 guy…5 women.

Unless you have pictures…it didn’t happen.

Well, according to Joe Friel, neither.

Recovery techniques:

Hot Shower or Bath

…do not linger, as you will dehydrate more.

Sauna

…do not use the steam room for recovery…

I’m taking a little poetic license, equating a hot bath with a whirlpool, perhaps. And if you get in and out of the whirlpool, it’s probably better, but who can get in and out?

You are also asking about off season, so, as they say, YMMV.

With this statement you are officially one of us.

Welcome aboard.

My bathtub at home has jets, and I’m in it after every long run for at least 1/2 hour. I know it’s not good for me and that an ice bath would be better, but I don’t care. I read a book, drink some more water and generally unwind and get warm. So far, I haven’t noticed any negative effects, but I’m also (knock on wood) injury-free these days. If I had knee or ankle problems, maybe I would rethink.

let’s see…

sit where naked, hairy man ass has been (sauna) or,

sit in a pool of public urine, sweat, lost hair and dead skin…

Wow, life’s choices. I’ll take a shower, beer and tv.

edit: no beer, h2ofun12hourironfinisheron4.12743hoursoftraining believes that any alcohol is an indication that one is weak, me weak? hell no there tough guy!!!
