OCTOBER FISH THREAD: New format and it isn't scy, scm, or lcm

Haha Monty …… I told my classmates that you can’t judge a book by its cover after I was awarded the “six million dollar man” prize because of all the surgeries I have had in the past five years:-) and already have two more scheduled in the first half of 2025!

Keep posting your impressive workouts to motivate me for when I arrive near a pool!

So this popped up on my feed today, this was quite the rumor when I was a wee lad just beginning my pool journey. A bit misleading is that it was not 100x100, but a 10k straight swim… Mike was a legendary trainer back in the day, got a few medals too…

A couple other great ones later in the article too, this was the thought for a time to do huge yardages to get the body to make adaptations…

Wow. That’s a blast from the past. I remember when this happened. I was trying to dip under 10:00 for a 1000 and this was both inspirational and in someways discouraging that a human could do that.

Now, almost 49 years later, todays session 3600 SCY:

1200 Fr (17:34)/200K
6x200P on 3:00 (2:32-37)
8x50 on 60 (38-9)/200K
16x25 on 30 (18s)

@monty What are frogs in you workout write ups?

Frog is just my short written version of breast kick. As it turns out in my advancing years(yours too) that most all of my good events have breast stroke in them. And since so much of that stroke is the kick, I try and do around 20% of my workouts doing the frog kick…

Of course I could just do breast stroke, but the hot pools I usually swim in force me into little micro breaks, and kicking with my head out of the water suits that purpose while getting most of what I need towards that awkward stroke…

So sub 10 back in the day for you, that is impressive and would have had you in the fast lane of the distance guys…

304 consecutive days of swimming today…and that’s were this current streak will end. I’m going to Nashville tomorrow to try and run a half marathon there on Saturday. I haven’t run a stand alone half in 14 years and I guess I’m going to see if all the swimming will help get me to the finish line. Always enjoy reading the swim posts and hoping for continued progress for you TC!

best wishes for your half and great job on 304!
Thanks for the well wishes - did shoulder PT (3 exercises) again this morning along w the hip stuff.

I think you will actually feel a lot better letting that streak go, that’s a lot of pressure that just keeps piling up. Main thing is you are one consistent dude, so go out there and run that half on swim fitness and show us how it is done!!!

Lots of kids and folks sick around me, so took it easy today in the cool pool to keep my immune system on high alert.

Back at the high and hot pool, just glad to get the gills wet today. Still hoping my immune system dodged another sick kid/wife bullet:

Been tripping around the states and still here

Can’t find the time to swim and post but done a few yards workouts.

It’s taking all my mind power to organise swims at the pools we are finding on the road

Hope ow season is going good

Really hope you are having a bang up time here in the states, drop us a few highlights when you get a break. And glad you are finding some swim times, how do you like them yards???

So after last weeks Ironman swim I had a look at the paces of the lead pros. Converted to yards it looks to be about 1;07 or so per 100, about sub 1;05 for the new record holder who was an age grouper. Got me to thinking, how long and if I could do those paces with all sorts of caveats.

So first thing I dont have the $500 dollar swim skins they used, and my pool is not salt water, and I dont get to draft. So my equalizer somewhat will be that I will pull this experiment. My eventual goal will be to do the entire swim at their pace(in intervals of course), so today was just a feel out swim to see if it will even be possible. Thought about doing 100’s, but then after some consideration figured I would start with 50’s. Did 2 sets of 10@1;10, 1 set of 5@1;10 and 1 set of 5 at 1;00 for a total of 30 today with a 4x50frog between sets to cool off in the hot pool.

Managed to keep all the 50’s from 33+ to 31 flat, so right at the record pace for 1500. Think I will angle more for the pro pace next time with maybe a few more on the minute to tighten up the workout. Of course I will have to do this on days where I get more than an hour, but will be interesting how long it will eventually take me to get in the entire 4200+ at race pace…Suppose today was my first ever USRPT workout, was actually fun and I went a lot faster than I thought I could, especially since I felt shitty in warm up:

Hang in there with the PT TC!
Thought I’d do an end of month post on the half marathon in Nashville. Well run event, hillier than what I expected. I did look around at the start and thought I must have been the oldest person there. Young demo in Nash!
Long story short, it went fine for about 8 miles and then things went south pretty quickly. Outside of one 10 mile run, I had done no race specific prep, just the sprint tri training and the 304 consecutive swim days. Aerobic side was fine, I just didn’t have the legs for the distance. A little specificity of training, especially at this age, was certainly needed! So…took a shot, finished it, all good. Been back in the pool all week.

congrats on the finish!

Don’t beat yourself up there Mark, 13 miles at our age is no easy feat without the specific training. Call it a win that your are not injured, I sure would… (-;

I got a rare late swim in the low and cool pool, so did some more of my USRPT training to get ready to emulate the pro ironman swim times:

3x100buoy@1;40(1;24/23/21)3x100frog@2;00(1;50/50/49)3x100p@1;30(1;18/17/15)100IM kick(1;53)
2x(5x50p@1;00/5x50@1;30IM order)50’sp(33+/32+/32+/32/32—31+/31+/32/31+/31+) IM’s-fly(36/35+)back(41/40)brst(42+/41)free(32+/32)

Felt good with the O2 and cool water, and took off 10 seconds rest from the 50’s and it was ok. Think going forward will try that interval and see if I can complete more than 30 at race pace…

yes to what monty says, @Mark_M !
