Hi everyone - I do not anticipate being in the water this month, but maybe in November. I have hip surgery scheduled for 10/18 to correct the ischiofemoral impingement that has been the source of the hip pain I’ve been talking about since December 2023. I’m in enough daily pain that I’m not even doing shoulder PT, as it requires using hips somewhat to stabilize my body.

Carry on. I will be back and in the meantime I’ll keep coming up with semi-lame thread titles for you. (The good ones in the past couple months were Skuj’s).

I have been away, but sorry to hear about your continuing hip pain! Wish you fast healing and a full recovery. Take care and hang in there!

my wife is in PT for hip tendinitis, has been very painful, so we sympathize…

short day today, 25k trail race on Sat morning, and coming off a 3-day 30mile backpack up to 12000ft and back down again…
3x200, 3x100IM, 3x50
hr hit max at the end of each set, which means I’m still carrying fatigue from the backpack I guess. Worth it tho…

Did an interval run on treadmill after getting my ass handed to me on the bike yesterday, so was not hopeful for todays swim…But as usual what I think is going to happen didnt, and felt great in the pool and hammered out a good set for my upcoming 400free race.

Tuesday’s swim:
3 x 1200:

  1. 8 x 100 swim/ 50 kick
  2. 2 x (4 x 50 drill / 50 swim golf, 200 pull)
  3. 16 x 25 kick/ 50 swim
    100 back, 100 free
    3800 SCM, an hour and a half.

Working hard on drills and kick at the moment. Trying to feel the muscles I need to use to get my hips and legs higher in the water. LOTS of room for improvement: the 25 kicks were taking me 1:10 (nope, that’s not a typo: 70 seconds for 25m kick). The kids’ swim club was in the lanes next to me and they swam 75m in the time it took me to kick 25m. Kick sets for me are an exercise in humility.

3400 SCY today

1200 FR (17:38), 12x100P on 1:30 (1:14-18), 200IM K, 16x50 on 1:00 alt free and stroke. Back to swimming next to the age group team for most sessions and desperately trying to occassionally stay ahead of the slowest 12 year olds in the next lane over.

Oh crap sorry to hear about this, but good there is a resolution path. I have not been participating much in the monthly fish threads, mainly because my workouts are unstructured and I have nothing useful to write about, but today was actually a good example. I got to the pool with 40 min to spare and just swam doing “whatever” as there were five people in my lane…depending on when I got a stretch to go fast, I did free or fly…more congestion was back…even more congestion I did breast…most congestion and I was kicking on back both dolphin and flutter board. It was like warming up for swim meet with 10 people in the lane and you can’t really decide what to do so you move and do what you can when you can…

…but then with 10 min to go, EVERYONE left my lane, so I had the entire lane to myself, so I “raced” a 400IM. No times, just doing a 400IM like in racing on top of the black line and had time for a 150m cooldown after.

So that was pretty cool!!!

even chiming in “I did an unstructured workout” is cool if you want to check in, dev.

Getting close to my big race week of swimming and triathlon, man it is hard to prepare for both. In my case the triathlon is going to suffer bigly as I really want to swim well in the 3 swim days prior. I have only managed a few 50 mile bike weeks and a few 8 mile run ones, so it will have to be muscle memory once again…Did my hardest run intervals to date this morning, then followed up with this swim:

Well today I was there are peak time 5-6 people in my lane so I must have spend 40 percent of the time doing kick on my back, kick on my side, breast stroke, dolphin kicking ten kicks off the wall on my stomach etc etc. I actually had a very good workout, but I swear i did not do a single 100m hard free !!! Just too many people there!!!

Friday heading to the 50 LCM pool …generally 3 people per lane so it is swimming bliss.

3 weeks to go fo 70.3 Morocco in Tangier. Yikes…gotta get some running in!

Got to the lower desert pool today, but 7am is really tough for me. But figured this is the last hard one before I start the swim taper, meet starts on Wednesday and I still want to get in one more bike and run too, as I wont be doing either during the 3 day meet… So did a fast broken 400IM today with some other sprint stuff:

@monty good luck with your racing. 400 should be a good one for you given your base and speed work in the pool. Hopefully not too many 65 yr old youngsters aging up and going fast.

been back at it in the pool a bit. But with the bubble going up last week I had to modify and only swam once.
Made it to a noon wo w a diff group.

Prob went out too hard as the rest is not nearly enough for max and its too much sprint volume.

Round 2 I realized that would be super hard to match so I backed off a bit. was 28, 44, 59, 44, 28
Round 3 I was smoked and goal was under the 1:00 pace (spoiler alert, didnt make it) 28, 44, 101, 45, 26 (as I was racing a young kid who was taking it to me)

Not a great set TBH. Would be great w more rest and maybe only 2 rounds to really hit it. But I made th pivot and kept myself from completely exploding. Hoping for 3 swims this week!!

Still working hard on improving body position and kick. Fitness is good, speed not so much.

first day I could walk normally, after Saturday’s trail race… 25k and 2500ft of climbing with rocks in.

3 swims last week. Not a ton to report.

Day one was some easier distance stuff on tuesday. 200s, and was cruising 2:15-16s

Day 2 was more springing but my daughter was home “sick” from school so i was on borrowed time. did a broken 500 as 200-200-100 This was SUPPOSED to be all out but i backed off bc i was wrecked from 2 days of serious gym work. was 2:09, 2:08 and 1:00 (iirc) for an add up under 5:20 for the 500.
Day 3 was such a random mix of waaay toooo many *max efforts being asked. So it was disjointed but nice to swim w a larger group.

12k or so for the week. Adding that third swim a week makes such a diff on feel for the water.
