Oceanside, CA - places to train while I stay there?

Here we go … packing up the family- it’s ECNL soccer playoffs time!
I’ll be staying in Oceanside, CA (200 block of Windward Way- just north of Carlsbad) June 23rd - June 30th.
Anyone know what the training atmosphere will be like there? Any protected swim areas (i.e.- no shark threat)? Running spots? Rent? a tri bike (I most likely will not do)?
Basically just need to keep fitness level up while out there. I’ll be between races which is good.
Thanks for any words of wisdom.

Lots of great riding and running to be had along coast hwy.

There are sharks in the ocean. If that bugs ya, swim at the ecke YMCA in leucadia. They have an amazing pool and a daily masters program in the AM.

look into the SLR bike trail too.

Tri club of San Diego does some morning swims out of Carlsbad - check their schedule / site

Running is easy along the coast there is a bit of a board walk in Oceanside

Nytro in Encinitas (just south of Carlsbad say 15 minutes from Oceanside) rents road a tri bikes. Riding up and down the 101 is nice and scenic, but there are a fair amount of lights. Head east across the 78 from Oceanside for some nice hills.

I do this ride every week (CDS/56 to 101N, U-turn at downtown Carlsbad - 50 miles, Garmin typically records ~5 mins/2.5 hours as stopped) and the lights are manageable. Lots of T-intersections that can be legally (or safely but illegally) ran. Other than down towns (Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar), the lights seem to be at least a mile apart

I highly recommend a similar ride.

If you’re renting a TT bike rather than a road bike, the 56 bike path from the 5 to Carmel Valley Road is a little bit dicey with roots pushing up the asphalt in areas.

I think the SD tri club does OW swims in mission bay on thursadys too. Pollution keeps the shark factor lower there, but there are jellies…

Also look intow. Lilac rd for some good climbs on the bike. Calaveras has good trail running.

If you plan on riding through the base (pendleton) to san clemente, you need to register with the gub-ment at least a week in advance… registration is good for 6 months… you can find it on the pendleton website

Checkout Spinlister.com if you are looking for a rental, should be some options in that area. As for routes and where to train, you can checkout my Strava (linked below) back in January this year and then January and March 2015. You are in a pretty good location in my opinion. If you want to do an awesome weekday group ride in terms of fast paced, the Swamis ride is close to you, it actually comes down the main street you are staying off of. Really enjoy training down there, hope you find it great as well.

Annnnnd… it looks like the place we were going to stay fell thru.
So-
We are looking to stay on Windward Way (Oceanside, CA). Know anyone that has a place they want to rent? Lol- ugh !!!
6/22 thru 6/29
4 adults
2 kids

Try vrbo for the rental.

Also, I think pulse endurance rents bikes for local triathlons, so they might do weekly rentals. Bit more of a drive from oside than nytro, but they are very cool there

Agree with the roots. I also avoid the 56. It’s crowded at times and noisy. There are also some intersections that can creep up on you. Far better places to ride in the area.

x2
.

If you ride the PCH south towards downtown from Nytro, you’ll be able to get a nice climb on Torrey Pines as well. Agree with other posters on the ride north from Encinitas. Lights are manageable once you’re out of downtown Encinitas and the drivers are extremely courteous. Running along the PCH is awesome as well in the Encinitas/Cardiff area. There is a track session in north county on Tuesdays or Thursdays (can’t remember which). Know that if you want to ride north of Oceanside through Camp Pendleton, you will need advance approval. You can no longer simply show up with your id and be let through. Have fun!!!
