Oceanside 70.3 - Race Report

First Ironman logo event for me. I did 5430 in Boulder last year - and still think Barry and crew have the best race in the world going there. Used Tribiketransport to get my bike To/From Salt Lake City - bike was in perfect condition when I picked it up…hope it gets back in the same condition. Calif 70.3 was a checkpoint for me to gauge fitness and mark a milestone along the Ironman CDA timeline. Lots and lots of Computrainer miles in the basement, a few (like 3-4) long outside rides, consistent swimming and quite a bit of running in the bank during the winter.

Swim: Double-capped it and didn’t really notice that the water was that cold. Felt pretty good once I got going. I liked the uncongested start. Easy to find a lane and get moving. Felt good until towards the turn around when the swells started to get bigger. Drank some sea water. Heading back I got into the groove and hammered back towards the high rise and then while making the turn toward the ramp with about 300m to go found another gear and really got after it. My Timex said 30:00 flat when I hit the ramp - official shows 31:00 flat. Either way, I was happy.

T1: Pretty slow transition…like almost 5 mins. I wanted to put on my HRM so I could pace myself and gather some data. Hard time getting socks on - next time, no socks for me on the bike.

Bike: Glad I had the HRM because I started what felt like a medium pace but my HR was sky high. Got into a good pace and then around 10 miles got a red card for drafting. I know everyone denies it and says this but…I wasn’t drafting. Going up a small hill/rise and some dude in front was going VERY slow. I wanted and tried to pass but too many riders on the left of me going around me and the slow guy. I waited a bit too long and got nailed. 4 mins in the Penalty Tent. That was hard to accept. Got going again, felt good, those hills were no problem - those aren’t hills if you’ve been training in Utah! Wind, not that bad. At 45 I had to pee - yep I need to learn to pee on the bike. I stopped at the last butt hut and took a piss. With 4 min penalty and 2 min piss I had a bike split of 2:52 - I’m fine with that for now.

T2: Got in and out in an okay time. Nothing interesting happened here.

Run: Told myself I was not going to be denied sub-8 min miles. About 300-400 meters out on the run course saw Crowie and Potts side by side coming down the little dirt hill. That was a good shot of adrenaline for me right there. Got into a good rythm. Nutrition was going well. Ran a bit too fast on the first 2-3 miles, reeled it in to 8 min flat. First loop was pretty straightforward. Goal of second loop was to hold 8 min flat on the out and then descend the pace by 5-10 seconds on the last leg. Saw some dude with “HTFU” on a visor on the run. Around mile 8-9 pace started to fade - so I picked up the cadence, kept consuming the coke and hammered on. Mission accomplished…1:43 run split.

5:14 finish time. Learned some things that I will fix and work on for Ironman. Peeing on the bike would be a good skill. Pay more attention to my passing strategy. Bike fit is DIALED IN and solid so keep that where it is and don’t fuss with it anymore. Cut the damn fork so it looks like a real bike. Keep the same nutrition plan - it is working so just enhance it for Ironman as needed during training. Buy more Infinit because that stuff rocks!

Overall, enjoyed Oceanside, the weather was great, loved not having tights, hat, gloves, warmers, etc. on during a ride, good race for me and now ready to HTFU and get back to training for Ironman.

Thanks for reading.

Nice Work… trying to stay clean on the bike was difficult, sorry you got tagged.

Good luck at CdA

good job bro. CA70.3 is a nice early season benchmark and motivato. Now its out of the way you can get started on the big stuff! good luck with the CDA training and staying healthy!

Great work on an early season race!

Saw some dude with “HTFU” on a visor on the run. <<

Was that you who ran by and said something to Paulo? We had fun standing there and watching people go by.

Good job on your race.

No. I said nothing to the HTFU visor guy on the run. But figured he was cut from the Slowtwitch cloth.

That was the one and only PAULO.

Hey Jackbauer,
Good race! I have to say though, if you’re not in contention for a Kona slot, why piss your pants and get your socks and bike all covered in pee? Just take the 1 extra minute to get off and pee. That’s my theory anyway.

Dude, that’s exactly what I was thinking while peeing in the butt hut. After getting red carded for drafting I was sure not to be hit with an indecent exposure penalty so I scoped the last john on the way back. In hindsight it would have been faster for me to do it in T2 but you never know with lines, etc. I won’t piss myself in an Iron distance race for sure - not worth it and getting off the bike for a few mins would be a nice stretch.

Great race and TR!! Too bad you were nailed in the penalty box, but an excellent time overall!

I also did Oceanside this past Sunday but my time was significantly slower. 7:18. However I didn’t train for this race, and I know that sounds ridiculous, but I had high hopes at the end of last summer and didn’t meet my expectations. But…I finished it and am proud to say I did. What a beautiful course. I can’t even believe how great it was…considering Vineman 70.3 was my first HIM last July, this course was so flat compared to that one!

I thought the race support was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for more. Only minor problem was my goggle strap breaking about 2 minutes before we were scheduled to enter the water…somehow I was able to jimmy it and they didn’t fall off my face - amazingly.

I’ve always wondered, though…why do people drink cola during a race? There’s nothing but crap in that stuff! I stick to my HEED mix and it carries me through the entire race. Sometimes I almost feel like wonderwoman after drinking it.

that’s why you don’t wear socks on the bike!

My theory is that if I am going to spend hundreds (thousands) of dollars and train for hours and hours to improve my time by a minute (second) or two I am not going to give that time back so I can use a porta-john. By the time you pee it’s all water anyway, the tri shorts are fast drying, and I am generally soaked with sweat anyway.

But, yeah… it’s kind of gross.

I train to improve my time too, but if I take a pee break in every race, it all evens out:)

Hopefully, not like THIS WonderWoman:

My first IM, my goal was go go sub 12. I stopped to take a leak on the bike, a nice big one, and my final race time was 12:01. If I could go back…yeah, i would probably piss myself.

Oh God…no.

Trust me, I’m in shape enough to do another HIM…I just didn’t get out of Oceanside in time to get my money back, so I did it anyway and surprised myself.

Well, my first IM, I went 12:00:48, so obviously stopping to piss cost me a sub-12 finish too. Damnit!

Nice, nice race JB! Those CT rides in the basement are money in the bank, and it showed. For us old guys, who have to pee sometimes more than once on/off the bike, doing so without stopping is almost a necessity. Thanks for the 5430 kudos, too - hope we see you (and lots of STers) back this year. Have a terrific CDA! B.
