Ocean City, NJ Open Water Swim

Does anyone know a good place in Ocean City, NJ to do an open water swim? I am traveling down there for a few days next week and don’t want to lose ground on my Timberman training. Thanks.

I’m interested too since I will be a few miles south of you in Avalon Nj.

Probably a bit of a drive, but…

Stone harbor hatch club basin…shelter harbor basin…next to 96th street…are both excellent, protected places to swim…former is .25 miles around and latter is .6 miles. Let me know if you need a partner.

Randy, how about six laps around stone harbor on Sunday? Is boat traffic anything to worry about there?

Thanks!!! I really appreciate it. I might need a partner, but I’m warning you I’m not a very fast swimmer.

OK–it’s set. What we should do is gather at 2pm at the shelter Harbor Basin on this Sunday–8/7. So, what we are looking at is before the first stop light when you come into Stone Harbor on 96th street. On the right before the light is Stone Harbor Pizza and you’ll want to walk up besides the restaurant (on the west side) and you’ll come to a dock and a boat and that’s where we’ll be–my training partner owns the boat. The swim is fantastic–0.6 miles of clean, clear, traffic free salt water–I swam 2.4 miles this afternoon–it’s very nice.

The boat/dock and Stone Harbor pizza are right across from Fred’s and Uncle Bills.

There will be a fairly large group and maybe a SUP or two. We generally swim hard for 300-400 yards and then regroup…and keep going. Probbly total distance is 1.2-2.4 miles…

very friendly–hope to see you there

Any room for another? I may be in Ocean City tomorrow, and 2pm sounds like a good excuse to escape for a bit.

Is there parking nearby?

Love to have you join us Ken–it’ll be nice to have a true fish in the group. You can creative on parking if you want to walk a couple of blocks but I usually just plop 2-3 quarters in the meters–there is plenty of parking on 96th street and you can always hit DQ afterwards!

This sounds like a party… anyone bringing a grill ? You might just see a rare one armed swimmer out there if you look hard enough;0)

Totally off-topic, but that reminds me of a one-armed swimmer story. My best man (ex-Clemson distance swimmer) separated his shoulder in a bike accident, but swam anyway. One of the triathletes in the pool (who was a very good distance triathlete) almost quit the sport that day, as Steve was beating him in the 150 repeats (on like 2:05)…swimming with one arm.

Hah… If my shift was not working tommorow, I would definitely be there giving it a go tommorow

Was google searching and found this thread. Did you guys ever find a place on OCNJ island? I will be there next week and want to get some swimming in but my only mode of transportation will be a beach cruiser and i don’t want to go to stone harbor. Thanks!

Guarded swims Sundays and Thursdays. Was going to swim two weeks ago when I was there, but Hurricane Arthur was moving in and a decided that it wasn’t the best time to swim in the ocean.

Water temp was gorgeous. Have fun!

I live in Ocean City.

Open Water Masters swim 6:30 am on Thursday mornings with the Ocean City Swim Club at 34th street beach
