UCI probably said the use of a chain was illegal for the hour attempt.
I saw this mentioned in the timetrialling forum in the UK. It’s not exactly a replica. This is the bike that Graeme used in his first hour attempt in Norway. The one where he failed to beat the record. This was built by Mike Burrows, who is most famous for his Lotus 110 bike at the same time.
All else being equal this was a better bike then old faithful. Which flexed terribly during starting efforts. But the narrow Q factor and superstition took him to the hour record on his steel bike.

That’s a lovely looking bike. I like the way the seller says it has ‘only been ridden for training, and once for an hour’. LOL. I wonder what the reserve price is.
#&%$ing UCI!!!
If I remember rightly from his autobiography thats correct (just couldn’t think of a better way to describe it). I think he felt a bit forced to ride it but felt more attuned on the hike he built himself.
