I haven’t seen this elsewhere so I figured I’d post here. Quote from Oakley’s website below. No Ant+ support that I can see :frowning:
Correction: Ant+ support!!! happy dance

I saw Ben Hoffman make an Instagram post about Radar Pace the other day but I figured it was just another pair of sunglasses. This is cool but I don’t think I would buy it.

I’m going to pick up a pair assuming they fit and I can see out the top while in a TT position. I have a nice closed loop I TT and run on in the winter.

I recall when Crowie was at CES for this to present a year or so back. Both Intel and Oakley were beaming with delight

Looks like one of those gimmicks that’s sorta interesting in a promo video but wildly annoying in practice. But to each their own. $450…wtf

Given that it has an earpiece, I expect this will be illegal to use during a race

Hello noofus and All,

Have you heard if the Oakley Pace sunglasses are legal for triathlon races? I appears that they are not at this time … but maybe Oakley is lobbying for a rule change or an exception.

http://www1.pcmag.com/media/images/518403-oakley-radar-pace.jpg?thumb=y&width=740&height=426

I remember when the radar speed gun industry lobbied successfully to get an exception for their radar guns in California … and amended the ‘no speed trap’ laws to create an exception for radar guns.

WTC 2016 rules state: Bicycle Rules: (m) Headsets or headphones are prohibited during the Race; (Stop‐and‐Go Penalty, DSQ if not remedied promptly)

USAT 2016 5.8 Illegal Equipment. Any participants who any time uses wears or carries a headset, radio, headphones, personal audio device, or any other item described in Section 3.4(i) shall be assessed a variable time penalty

3.4(i) i. Unauthorized Accessories. No participant shall, at any time during the event, use or wear a hard cast, headset, radio, personal audio device, or any other item deemed dangerous by the Head Referee. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty.

As an aside “use or wear a hard cast” …… is that a plaster cast for a broken bone or some other kind of cast? And why would someone be racing with a broken bone?

Who do we eMail to clarify rules? I have eMailed Charlie Crawford (WTC) in the distant past but have since lost his address … maybe Jimmy is doing that equipment part now?

Anyone purchase these or have any feedback on them? No DC rainmaker review that I could see.

It also needs to be tethered to your phone for you to get coaching. In a race, you can just leave the phone at home and take out the earpieces - then they’re just nice sunglasses.

Disclaimer: I work for Intel

As I noted in my last reply, I work for Intel. I’ve been field testing these for the past 10 months or so, so I’m quite familiar with them. What would you like to know?

I’m glad you posted up with your experience of the glasses, I purchased a pair 2 weeks ago and have always had Bluetooth issues being dropped after about 11 miles, drops 5/6 times then looses connection permenanty ruining the training session. I’m using an iPhone 6S on iOS 10.1.1, tried rebooting phone, 18 second reset on glasses, my phone is on my left sleeve, I’m connecting through the app! Any thoughts or advice? Oakley are happy to replace and send this pair to Intel for investigation however would appreciate your thoughts.

Can I use these as “just” bluetooth headphones or do I have to connect through the Oakley app? Oakley is pretty opaque about what their training plans look like and, considering I’m using a training plan from a 3rd party, I’m not inclined to listen to what the Oakley app has to say about my run/ride

As an aside, if you can mention it to anyone at Intel, I think you guys should open up your platform to plans from 3rd parties. Just because Crowie rocks the glasses in an ad, IMO, doesn’t mean the training advice is worth anything. If you’ve spent any time on ST I’m sure you know people agonize and pontificate about training philosophy as much as anything else. I see the Oakley/Intel vision: just wake up, put on your glasses, and listen to the “voice in your head”. That’s a great vision and I’d love to do that 95% of the time but I’d also like to be able to “go under the hood” and steer the ship from time to time.

I’ve experienced this as well on at least one of the units I tested. My colleagues tell me the issue is with iOS 10 and many 3rd-party Bluetooth devices; the team is waiting on a fix from Apple. Sending the glasses in for another pair won’t fix the problem. Here are some of the relevant articles:

Yes, you can use them as Bluetooth headphones without the app.

On the coaching side, I hear you - one of the first pieces of feedback I gave the team. Technically this is quite doable; just needs to get on the roadmap, which ultimately Oakley controls. I’ve forwarded your comments to the team (I don’t work directly on the Radar Pace; just got pulled in to test the product after my company was acquired by Intel because I happen to be an Ironman who has a background in AI).

That said, I did get benefit in my training with the glasses even though my exact training program differed somewhat from the standard ones provided by the app. In particular I’ll highlight three areas:

  • It made me go easy on my easy days. Because it does a surprisingly good job of learning your training zones after a few workouts, it will start telling you to ease off if you’re supposed to be in Z2 or easier and you end up in tempo or threshold zones (it allows you to spike a little for variations in terrain, but otherwise it will call you on it).
  • It wants you to stay in your most efficient cadence zone, both in cycling and running, so you will get coaching if you fall below, say, 85 rpm on the bike, except when climbing (but even then it wants you not to grind unless you’re doing a big gear session). I didn’t always follow its advice, but it was useful in its tireless pursuit of efficient cadence.
  • It’s pretty good at detecting muscular or cardiovascular fatigue that prompts you to cut your workout short (because you’re too fatigued to do the planned session).

We tend in this group to train pretty hard and stick to plans - it’s an interesting tool to make sure you’re also sufficiently recoveed to do the planned session.

If I get any official roadmap updates, I’ll be happy to post them here.

Ian

Thanks! Ideally, I’d like to be able to plug in any training plan from Trainer Road or Training Peaks and have the Radar Pace then guide me through that program (e.g. pacing, telling me to cut a workout short, etc.)… even if it’s just the bike and run portions of the training plan. That would turn something like the Radar Pace from a nifty accessory into a genuinely useful training tool IMO.

Thanks for your rely, I’ve tried the fixes and still have issue with Bluetooth dropping out, even though it is less frequent, there is still the underlying iOS issue which I guess will take apple some time to fix , I presume that’s not a quick process.
Did you experience Bluetooth issues with Android?

It’s been a while since I tested on Android. I will check with the team to see whether there are any outstanding connectivity issues on that platform before I give it the thumbs up. It was the first platform to be developed since it’s a lot more open, but that brings with it other problems (e.g., different behavior on Samsung vs. other Android devices).

Ian

So I presume for now it’s wait for Apple?

Yes, it seems so, unfortunately.
