Does anyone know what the swim distances on at Ala Moana (Oahu) from the Diamond Head beach to the first white pole, then to the next lifeguard stand, and finally the Eva pole.
I thought the total lenght was 1000 meters - Is that first pole 400 or 500 meters?
How about at Kaimana, I believe he wind sock is 200 meters…?
Ala Moana - I would have to disagree with the above and say it’s 500 to the first white pole, 1000 to the turn around at Ewa end. I tell myself the life guard stand in between is 750, but really I have no clue on that one.
Thanks, some local email replies of indicated Ala Moana is 1000 each way. I have wondered about the life guard stand because when the Tin man used to be down there, it started at the tower and was a 800 swim.
The kaimana question came back at 200- yards, which was strange. I have only heard about it as 200 meters.
I am in a training cycle that calls for 400 meter intervals, which I hate doing in a pool. Much prefer out and back at Kaimana.
alamoana x on the wall to the ewa end is 1000 meters. Going from Diamond head side to ewa end the first lifeguard stand is 200 2nd is 400 then the white pole is 500 then last life guard stand is 750 followed by the final pole at 1000 meters.
Kaimana: straight line distance may be 200 meters but swims like 250. Count it 500 round trip and it is very similar in time to your Ala moana pole to pole.
What is this “white X” everyone is talking about at ala moana??? I swim there all the time and have never seen the “x”??? I just swam there this afternoon.
I consider it 500 from the magic island side lifeguard stand to the first pole and then 500 to the second. I’m never quite sure where along the shore to start that first 500 but I swear the second half always seems faster so maybe I’m starting a bit too far back into the curvature.
Kaimana, it’s gotta be more than 200m. I’ve always guessed around 270 or so. On a nice decently flat day I can get out there in 3:45 or so and back in 4 minutes on a hard but not killing myself pace. I swim pretty consistant 1:25s on longer pool sets so there is no way it’s only 200m out to that windsock. Again, depends on where you start on the beach I guess. I count it as 500 for a round trip.
Did a mini practice tri this morning at Queens on our kinda accurate 1500m course. 21:52 without killing myself, woohoo!!! Not bad at all especially as I took some little breaks at the turns:) New 2XU suit was awesome!!! Some of the logos are peeling already but damn it fits nice.
Approximately 1/2 way out on to Magic Is. there is (was) a big white paint “X” on one of the rocks near the water line. {Sorry, yesturday mis-speak not Treasure Is.}
I have not swam there lately due to the many other more pleasurable sites for swimming.
I much prefer Kailua Beach boat launch to Flat Is. out and back. Lot more turtles in the morning.
Tai, I don’t swim at Ala Moana anymore cause I get ear aches there. But the white X is out on the sunset viewing wall. And then I was told that you line it up with a line between that and the guard tower, hope they didn’t move it in the last 15 years.Halfway from the beach and the reef (mid channel) is where it was originally measured to be one kilo. That is what the old skool guys told me when I moved here in 92. Why they didn’t put a bouy there is beyond me.
I think from the beach to the wind sock is 250m at high tide at K beach. So if you wade in a bit maybe 225. I can never swim straight going out, my times vary a lot on currents, tides in and out, and how the chop fools me at that beach. Glad to hear you are back and busy. TTing this weekend? I might even have gears on my bike this year. My buddy Geoffe will be on the Blue Rock Lobster this year. Aloha G
