NYC Bike Fit & Triathlon

OK so looking at getting back in to triathlon after a break for a few years and recently moving to NYC. Does anybody have any suggestions for somewhere to get a bike fit before I purchase a new TT bike - likely on eBay or the classifieds? I’ve had both 54 and 56 cm TT and road bikes in the past and sometimes they have worked and other times I’ve been stuck with a 2nd hand bike that doesnt fit that well, so eager not to make the same mistake (likely going to go for a P2 / P3, but only if the fit works).

The only place I could really find was enduranceWERX but I’m not keen on paying $400 for it! Any other suggestions?

Secondly - who do people train with here? The only clubs I can find seem to cost about $200+ a month for unlimited use of their facilities and a pre-written coaching plan with all the bells and whistles… but what if I just want to meet a few people for some weekly riding and probably join a swim class once or twice a week? In London I would pay something like 20 GBP a year for membership and then 5 per swim lesson, and that was it (nothing to run/ride). Do those types of clubs not exist in NYC?

Any other NYC triathlon tips? Have been here for about 5 months now and joined a running club straight away, but am only just getting back on the bike and haven’t been in a pool (typical triaf-a-lete) in about 2 years. Looking to do IMLP probably next year.

DO NOT go to Fit Werx over the bridge. Maybe they’ve changed but a few years ago I had a bad experience with their primary fitter there even though I had read a bunch of good reviews. It was clear all they wanted to do was sell me one of their bikes. Huge waste of money.

I don’t suppose you’re in the city for school? Most of the schools have a triathlon or cycling team that gets some workouts in together but outside of that I’m not really sure as I was out of the city once I graduated.

Where are you located in the city? I’m a part of Brooklyn Tri Club. We have official group workouts 4 days a week and an unofficial open water swim on Sundays during the season. All for $90/year.

There’s also lots of running, cycling, and swimming specific clubs throughout the city.

As for fit, $400 is pretty much the going rate for a tri fit in the city. I had mine done at ACME a few years ago and it was great.

I’m on the UWS, so was hoping for mid-week rides in CP and then weekend rides out over the GWB, though I do work in Brooklyn (Dumbo) and had come across BK tri club.

Do a lot of people do masters swimming instead of swimming with a tri club I wonder?

$400 for a bike fit is the going rate?! Damn… may need to just get the tape measure out myself and take a stint I guess

+1 on BTC, especially if you work in dumbo. The strength and run workouts are in the evening (biking in the morning) and easy to get to from dumbo (before we moved to LA we lived in vinegar hill).

Tailwind Endurance 172nd street just west of Central Park.

For fitting or for training?

Can’t say I need/want indoor training as have zwift at home, just somebody to swim/ride with pretty much

Brian Hammond (FIST certified) works out of Tailwind… complete with dynamic fit bike for a fit … Im assuming thats what Dan K was referring to. He’s solid

Also acme.

Yes - Brian.

Sorry, missed the swimming / riding aspect.

TriLife could be a group in manhattan / CP.

Riding groups are the hardest to find , honestly. Swimming, you can join a masters team, and it will be around 50-100/yr + 15-20 /swim.
