Moving to NYC in a month and want to live in an area that is tri friendly. I imagine a neighborhood with good run routes, easy pool access, solid gym, and either some decent bike routes or easy road access to get my bike and I out of the city for long rides. Any slowtwitch advice here? I am going to be working in Jersey City with some days in Manhattan.
i’d suggest not living in NYC, but rather live in NJ and commute in. Depending on where you pick, you have NJ Transit and/or the PATH as transportation. In that region, you have Maplewood, Morristown, Madison, Summit, etc, etc.
You’re not living in the city, but you have substantially better access to great routes for riding, running routes, etc. Feel free to PM me for me details.
it kind of depends what you are looking for.
In the city, I normally want to minimize the time to my AM workouts during the week. But if you don’t know the tri-scene in the city.
Best pool is probably on the Upper east side (Asphalt green: The only long course), this is also reasonably close to CP.
Chelsea Piers has an amazing facility in the 20s, is near the water running path, and you can follow that path all the way up to the GW bridge (but you aren’t that close to CP and the hills).
Both of the above have great triathlon programs. Other tri programs are : Empire tri, terrier tri, T2 multisport.
Most of the running clubs are in CP.
Riding: There are a few computrainer studios. Im a tailwind athlete and we are now on the UWS. There is also T2, and I think Chelsea piers has a computrainer studio too. Central park is used by a lot of folks in the AM (but i think its a little sketch). Your weekend riding will likely be in jersey , starting in Fort lee and heading up along the hudson river .
The trade off between jersey and manhattan is obviously space and money. If you like working out alone, probably doesnt matter. If you plan on joining a team, there are a lot of them and manhattan will make it all more convenient. The commute to jersey is about 25 minutes. No matter what, figure out where you want to workout and live there. I can assure you, that if you want to workout in manhattan, but live in JC, it will be really hard.
UWS, easy access to Riverside for runs and to go get the bridge for rides. Several pools available around, but membership is usually expensive. And probably the best for work commute.
Good luck with your move!
I’m actually moving to UWS in July… any specific tri-club recommendations?
I personally don’t train with any tri club but FTE at Chelsea Piers has a good team of you want to Olympic and Sprint

Don’t live in NYC. Either go West into NJ, East to L.I. or head North to Westchester/CT.
NJ is probably best given you will be in Jersey City, but depending on where in Manhattan, the train to CT/Westchester is very doable.
Thank you for all the responses. I am leaning towards NJ areas but still want to be close to work. Does anyone have location reco’s in the Jersey City/Hoboken areas? They seem the closest to my job location.
i live in brooklyn, and we have a great triathlon club here, named quite simply, brooklyn tri club. http://brooklyntri.org/ for a really modest $75 a year, you get four coached workouts a week, all in Prospect Park. Most of our members live in the surrounding areas of the Park, which is a quick train (or bike ride) from Manhattan.
We make our way to NJ often on weekends for group rides on 9W, which is a very popular road with cyclists, up to the top of Bear Mountain.
i live on the UWS
PM me and let me know what you are looking for and i will happily give you the detail
cheers, steve

If you want to get in relatively stress free (sic. CAR FREE), runs of any single distance , sans repeats, of 1.6, 1.7, 3.7, 4, 5, 5.1, or six miles on asphalt and or gravel/dirt, no place I have run in the USA, HK, Japan, Italy or South America even comes close to Central Park. I think it is main reason I didn’t move to NJ yet ! I say relatively stress free, because on busy days and times, you have to put up with oblivious tourists and some New Yorkers, and the obnoxious pedicab migrants hustling tourists for insane money to take a bike ride. If you ride early in the morning in CP, you can do the moderately hilly, non to easy 6M loop without interference with cars, and might even join a racing pack from one of the cycle clubs. I always ride in NJ, but that is because when I do have time to myself, I use it in CP, running. And fun wise, NY compared to NJ, is like comparing going into the best, top end sports store or LBS on the planet, just to browse, versus taking a lap of Wallmart . They both might have things you need or want, but seriously if you have to ask! Been running & biking in Manhattan for 20 + relatively safe years.
