NY Times dialect test

I hope it’s not behind the pay wall, but it got me perfectly. I grew up in Newark, worked in NYC, and lived all around. They put me at Newark/Paterson, NYC/Yonkers. Pretty good, huh?

Give it a try and tell me how it worked!

I tried that a few months ago. It put me in either Alaska, Florida or Buffalo.

I got Wichita. I don’t think I’ve ever even been there! This reminds me of those “which game of thrones character are you” quizzes.

Maybe since in the New York Times, it works best for New Yawkas!

Mine too. I grew up in the West suburban Chicago area. That’s exactly where the hot spot on the map was.

It totally missed on mine. Picked 3 places I’ve never spent significant time in - one I’ve never been to.

Edit: And my parents either - no link that I know of whatsoever.

Fairly close. It gave me a couple of northern Illinois towns, but also Rochester NY, which I don’t think I’ve ever been to.

I could have answered several questions differently, having lived in couple different areas for long periods. I think I answered more of what I grew up with, than maybe what I might say depending on context and who I’m with.

Lived in Ann Arbor from birth to 3rd grade, then to Garland, TX (borders Dallas) through high school. My entire adult life in Houston aside from a return to Ann Arbor for colege. Figured I would get nailed on the night before Halloween question, but the quiz put me in the DFW area.

My heat map was brightest around central, western, and southern NY. Which makes sense as I was born and raised in the Syracuse, NY area. That stated, I’ve lived in the south (NC, TX, and FL) longer than I lived in NY.

My least similar places were New Orleans, Baton Rogue, and Jackson, MS.

It pegged me perfectly, with the reddest part of the map in Kansas where I grew up. The least was the south, where I live now. This is pretty much spot on.

If by least similar you mean the dark blue, for me it was the entire country outside of the New Yawk area!

It put me at Stockton, Reno and Santa Rosa. I have driven through those place, but never lived there. I spent one weekend in Santa Rosa (Vineman). Close enough for me.

Nailed me as well, Boston/Worcester/Providence and I grew up outside Boston. Curiously, the one answer they highlighted as the most distinctive for my region was What do you call the rubber-soled shoes worn in gym class or for athletic activities?" - answer being sneakers. What the hell does everyone else call them???

It nailed me damn near to my home town. I was born in Coeur d’Alene, ID. My results were heavily skewed for the PNW and Spokane in general, all of 30 some odd miles from my homeland.

it said i was from Rockford IL - off by about 90 miles

now i’m wondering why we don’t have drive in liquor stores.

It thinks I’m from the OH MI border…

I’m pretty sure it is because I answered soda instead of pop.

Pop is my grandfather!

Pegged my wife who grew up halfway between Boston and Worcester. But the funny thing is that it put Arlington,VA as the third city which where we live now.

For me it put Santa Rosa / Sacramento, close, but I grew up about 150 miles south of there. Which doesn’t seem like a lot, but I am pretty sure it would have caught the difference between NY and Boston or Philly.

Grew up in Manhattan, came back with New York City, Jersey City, Yonkers. Plus a ‘heat zone’ in suburban DC where I also spent time. The choices for ‘raining on a sunny day’ were bizarre; wolf giving birth, indeed.

Spot on in CT!
