Nuun anyone?

Just out of curiosity how many people use nuun besides me? I only use it to train with. I’m getting really sick of it though. Anyone else on the brink of never drinking nuun again???

noah

I tried it twice in my last HIM. I love it! If I wouldn’t have taken it, I would have never finished. It settled the stomach after puking on the bike for two hours. I will not race without it. I emphasize racing only. I don’t take it for training since I do not have any Gi trouble in training.

It saved me when I forgot my extra electrolyte mix for a long training ride before Kona. I carry it with me for long rides, centuries, etc.

I have been using ZYM which I like a lot - Nuun upset my stomach a bit
.

I use Nuun for training and racing. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t use it. It rocks!!

I cannot leave home without it. I live in a hot, humid climate and this stuff has really changed my training and racing. All flavours are great and after a year of use I am not yet bored or sick of it. Great to take with your gels as well.

On the bike I usually have one bottle of Nuun and one of sports drink. With some gels this gives me the right combination of carbs, salt and electros. I find it a much better way of taking in salt as well.

I am yet to try this on an Ironman but I understand that a lot of guys in humid climates take some Nuun tablets on the bike and top up a bottle with just water and add the tablets as required.

Great stuff!!!

I too live in a hot humid climate.
I have just started using NUUN in combination with my sports drink and/or water. Bit of a testing phase now.
So far so good. Very convenient system.

Tasted like piss.

I tried eating a few without dissolving. A little better.

Much better off with either straight salt tabs or Thermolyte (www.nvo.com). Worlds better. Check the contents.

If the only way you can take Nuun is straight then Thermolyte is definitely for you. The taste is OK I think and compared to Thermolyte the sodium content is lower per tablet but I still take the required amount of sodium for me over the course of whatever race distance via the Nuun. I simply know that, for example, over the bike course, if I have x number of gels, a bottle of Nuun and a bottle of my sports drink that I get what I need in terms of carbs, sodium and fluids, and my stomach is still in one piece.

It’s all about what works for you…

how can you get sick of it? it hardly has any flavour.
It is really the best stuff, well for me anyway. I have used it during IM, 50 and 100 milers and it is great, easy to carry, and I can drink it forever and not get sick of it. Also I drink it instead of just plain water in the couple of days leading up to a big race.

Well, that was his question.

Some of these electrolyte/caloried products have so little electrolytes and so few calories I’m surprised people still use them.

Noah! Don’t leave us! I don’t know what you’re getting sick of, but after 5 years I confess to times when I could do with a new flavour. So - in the new year we’re getting some new ones released. If you email me, tim@nuun.com, then I’ll send some out to you as soon as the pre-run batch is ready.

I tried Nuun for the first time in training today, and it made me feel really bad. I thought I’d try nuun to replace my sports drink and then just eat more food. My first guess is I overdosed on electrolytes. I drank a 20oz bottle of it in the first half hour of my ride. It’s winter, I’m on my indoor trainer. When I tried to eat during the ride, my stomach felt really nauseous, too. Maybe I just have no idea how to use this stuff. Anyone else experience this?

I love nuun, but only use it after workouts. Sometimes, it seems like water just sits in my stomach after a workout, but nuun goes right in to the system. LOVE it!

That’s a lot of fluid at once. My guess would be you were over hydrating. Under pretty intense exercise a lot of people say about a liter an hour is about right, which would be ~32 oz. You took in well over half of that in the time period where you’re least likely to have been sweating the most so I think it’s probably less of an issue with NUUN and more of just too much fluid. Try doing the same thing and eating the same food with water instead and my guess would be you’d feel equally unwell. Maybe not, maybe you had a bad reaction to electrolytes, but that doesn’t seem as likely.
