Nutrition while training - water and sports drink

While training for extended periods, when you are using a sports drink (ie. Hammer or Infinit), do you also need to consume plain water at the same time? I guess, I am trying to say, if you doing a 3 hour ride, can you just have 3 bottles of your mixed drink? Thanks

Just depends on what works for you. I dilute down regular gatorade to about 50/50 with water. I like the sugar/sodium in gatorade. I might try to make it on 2 bottles for a three hour ride so I dont have to carry another bottle in my jersey pocket, but as it gets hotter out Ill be carrying a third. You are just going to have to see what works for you.

I just like to have at least one bottle with plain water. Give my body some hydration without the added calories. I had a friend who told me your supposed to drink water with perpetum, but i think thats just when its really concentrated. I tend to drink it fairly watered down so i don’t worry about it.

I take 2 bottles, 24oz water and 24oz gatorade. I can’t wash food down with gatorade, sp for consuming gels or bars, water is a must for me. Anyway, I find that 48oz consistently lasts 3 hours of riding for me. Around 3 hours I’ll need to stop and refuel.

A sports drink is formulated as a 6-8% CHO solution, which is experimentally determined to be the best for absorption. Unless you have issues with that, don’t water it down.

Drink WATER with gels as they are concentrated CHO. The same for real food snacks.

x2 what she said. If all your nutrition is coming from sports drinks, you may not need the water. Or, your mouth may just need a change!

Thanks, I have been using Infinit for the last several months, and it is working out good, I was just currious if I need additional plain water as well. I typically drink 1 bottle an hour, with the IM formula for my long rides, so I guess the 1 serving size has enough water in it (osmolality)

For 1-2 hr rides, just the drink is fine, but for longer rides, carrying 3+ bottles gets to be an issue so I mix my Infinit in a concentrate since it’s easier to find water to refill out in BFE and dilute as needed.

If you are asking about total fluid intake, you need to decide if you are getting dehydrated or not.

You are right on with the water suggestion! One bottle of INFINIT is exactly what the doctor prescribed. Keep in mind the is all your calories, electro’s etc… If it is hot… of course drink water! You don’t want to dehydrate yourself. As far as the Gatorade goes… when you cut the stuff with half water, you are only getting half the calories. Remember… that stuff is very low in calories. You will come up real short in your calorie requirements.
