This question came up on our ride Sunday. How many individuals have completed an Iron distance event (not mdot exclusive)? What % of the population? Searched briefly for a thread on this but nothing came up, my apologies if I missed it.
I’ve heard it was less than 1/10th of 1%, but I have no reference.

World population or just your country? Or just countries that have access to Iron distance races?
Napkin math, let’s make a few assumptions and then revise. I’ll start:
of years IM has been running: 30
of IMs each year: 30
of unique participants per IM: 1,000
My guess is ~900,000
World population ~7,000,000,000
Answer ~ .0001%
That would be assuming we participated at an even rate equal to this year, my bet would be 1/5 of .0001% to make up for exponential growth
Good questions. Since the discussion was based on the rapidly growing number of people who have completed a marathon, lets go with countries with access to iron distance races. But really, any will suffice as a frame of reference.
We were lamenting on the expansion of endurance sporting and how long, if ever, it would take iron distance to become viewed as less “crazy” to the majority of the population.

Probably the day after Americans stop being so damn fat…
