Numb toes from cycling

Cold weather, warm weather, thick socks, thin socks, no socks, with shoe insoles, without shoe insoles. It doesn’t matter. After about 20 minutes to a half hour, my toes start to tingle/hurt. Shoes are Shimano TR-01.

Has anyone dealt with this? Are my shoes too big? Too small? thanks for any help.

Ihave the same problem with the same shoe. I think they are too narrow, they are starting to get better after 600+ miles.

they’re too small. I had nike poggios that felt fine for 5 minutes, then my feet swelled and it was nothing but pain

got some pearl road/tri’s and the pain is gone…

Jim, do you find these narrow in the toe, hee, both or elsewhere? I have very narrow heels, but need a wide toe box (think Bozo-like feet). I was told that these were wide in the toe (comparatively). I have many more miles than 600, and still have the same problem.

I have wide paddle feet, I think I need a true wide shoe. These are supposed to be a little wider but evidently not enough for my EEs. I am going to get a pair of Lake or Nashbar wide width road shoes and save these for sprints. I have also considered having them stretched at a cobblers shop. They seem to fit fine otherwise, my right foot is slightly larger than my left and I feel the numbness/pain is definetly more pronounced in that foot. That led to my conclusion that it was the fit rather than some part of the shoe design causing this.

Make sure the pedal spindle is directly under the ball of your foot and in line with the joint of your second toe. I had this problem a couple weeks ago on my right foot - the cleat had shifted out of position. I slid it forward a couple mm and the problem seems to have resolved itself.

I had the same problem. I did a couple things that corrected the numb toes (caused I think by stressed Metatarsal area) I moved my cleats slightly back on my shoes so that the peddal hits a little further back on my foot. I also purchased some Dr. Sholles Sport Gel inserts for my shoes. I now feel like I’m pushing with the entire surface of my foot with each stroke which took the stress away from the forefoot…

I agree first try moving your cleats back about 2 mm. Also a moldeable insert which may better distribute foot load.

Funny, I just bought and inserted some Dr Scholls gel sport inserts this AM. Rode 45, and no relief. I’ve also had my cleats all over the place, and have had the same issues with both SPD pedals and now Speedplay. Curses.

It may not be the shoes. It might be tight hamstrings pinching a nerve or your seat/butt interface. Your seat may be too high, as well. It might be the shoes, though, it might be you need wedges to angle your foot inward/outward.

Are you are beer drinker? If so, stop drinking beer and the pain/numbness will go away. Theres something about drinking beer that causes high uric acid levels in the blood. These Uric acid crytals go down to your big toe, where the pain starts and spreads to your entire foot. It’s the beginning of Gout.

I swear it’s the truth. I had the same problem and as soon as I stopped drinking beer, the pain went away.

Hilarious. And I believe you. But I don’t think it’s a beer thing. This is pretty much an issue every ride (and my beer consumption is WAY down)
