Nose Plugs for swimming

I bought the Speedo nose plugs and they are worthless. They slip right off my nose.

What are people using that works in the pool?

I get bad rhinitis or something from chlorine allergy (terrible for my asthma too…) without them.

Thanks,
Robert

I use these. I too get sick from the chlorine. They are ok not great.

Couple of garbanzos (chick peas) will do the trick.

I’ve been wearing the clip for many years now (after learning of my pool allergy). I think it works great; beats sneezing all day or having to take medicine. It lets you exhale and keeps the water out. Can’t use lotions or oils on the nose before hand or it will slip off.

If you must take a look at what the top backstroke swimmers use… they are swimming 200 back under 2;00 and many of them use plugs…

Why do you need them?

Sorry to hear that. I use the Speedo Competition ones and they have never slipped off my nose once (used them for 7 months now). For $2.99 they are awesome.

Are you Voldemort? Then I could understand why you might have a hard time with the Speedo’s. Maybe you could cast a spell or something?

Even though pictures of various brands look similar, they seem to vary in size. As they are pretty cheap, I suggest trying several brands to find one that works. The kind with a wire frame can be bent a little for a better fit.

I tried the tyr metal ones, didn’t work. But the plastic tyr ones work well for me. So there are a few styles to try.

same problem as you…figured oily skin was the culprit.

Sorry, don’t know the brand, but I use the old school one with the metal band and flesh colored rubber on the ends. The metal band allows me to shape it easily. Been wearing the same one for three years now.

I agree with trying several brands (some brands even have different sizes and you should try the different sizes as well).

One tip is to wash your nose with soap right before swimming. The nose tends to be fairly oily.

Maybe if you read his whole post rather than just the title, you might figure it out…

I read it…but why he’s not sure what is going on, and I don’t either. Asthma is airway inflammation, nothing to do with the nose so I’m trying to understand what the fact are. He says “bad rhinitis or something” how are nose plugs gonna help what he doesn’t know he has.

When I get out of the pool I am, within about two hours, sneezing non-stop, with a bad runny nose and a sinus headache. Happens every time. I’m fine within about 12 hours.

If you have a solution to this problem feel free to let go of it.

Thanks. I wrote to Swim Outlet. Let’s see if they come up with a solution. I’m thinking cotton balls wrapped in vaseline and stuffed in my nose?

This problem must be a common one, given the ubiquitous use of chlorine in pools.

When you lie down for extended periods on your front (massage for eg) do you get an itchy nose? Does it happen after a lake swim? What happens when you take Claritin-D an hour prior to workout?

You need the speedo competition nose clip. The metal one. You can adjust the tension and it won’t fall off unless you’re getting punched in the face. Even then I don’t think it would fall off!

x2 for the metal speedo clip. I get nasty super-sneezes/runny nose after anything longer than ~30 minutes in the water (pool or OWS - doesn’t matter). But nose clip totally solves it for me.

I did get that Speedo clip kicked off my face halfway through IMWI, but only had a little bit of a runny nose on the bike after. I was scared I’d be a rapid-fire sneezing hot mess starting in T1, but the tri gods took mercy on me.

Cheers, Chris

Its not uncommon for chlorine to cause these symptoms. Everytime I swim at the local Y my nose runs, with some sneezing, for about 4 hours. I still don’t use a nose clip but I am considering it. The OP seems to have more severe problems than I do, it is a major azz pain.

This is the one I have! It slips right off my nose. Useless for my nose. I have a long, ethnic nose. Aquiline, as they say.
Thanks for the good try.
