North American Trade War

Trump blinked. Now he will declare victory. Hopefully eventually enough people will see the truth. More likely the truth will be revealed by inflation and the lot of ordinary people getting worse under Trump than reason. It is good for Canada to beef up our border security I anticipate increasing numbers of refugees from his immigration policy seeking to come north.

Seriously Windy this was bad. Businesses thrive on certainty and predictability. I think Mr. Market didn’t move much because it had already priced in Mr. Trump’s madness. Trump might not want to implode the economy for fun but he is playing a dangerous game.

I ignored the qualitative because the OP I was calling out wasn’t discussing higher concepts.

As of right now the “chaos” is a lot of noise and blustering.

To be clear I don’t like said chaos but as of right now it’s noise.

So far Trump and Co. have achieved nothing of note, it’s all window dressing. USAID is now part of the State Department, BFD. (If USAID was a bit more focused on it’s primary responsibility and less on DEI nonsense it wouldn’t have been a target.) Deportation is nibbling at the edges so far. Tariffs were imbecilic but ultimately amounted to a fart in the wind.

No matter how erratic and irrational Trump behaves he can always count on Windy, who totally does not support him, downplaying his unhinged stunts.

Maybe a fart in the wind

But a very clear message is that moving forward, an “agreement/treaty” with the US means SFA.

The term “ally to the US” means SFA

At least he isn’t hypocritical about this.

There’s also the fact of the United States shitting all over our closest allies as a bargaining tactic.

If I were living in Canada I would avoid buying American as much as possible so long as he’s in office. I hope they do.

We have trade issues across provinces. These have been brought to the forefront and I suspect people will now see the importance of resolving them. It was easier to ship South than East-West. If we resolve some of these, good will have come out of it. I have heard several Quebecers say “I’d rather trade with Alberta”. As bizarre as it it, that wasn’t so 10 years ago.

I suspect Canada and Europe will try to cooperate even more.

I believe Canada/China relationships can warm up after Trudeau is gone. “Big Bad China” doesn’t look as bad today.

All I am grateful for is Trudeau will not be part of the discussion.

Anything that introduces doubt, instability, distrust to a relationship is harmful. If we “negotiated” with our wives like that often enough, they might start looking elsewhere for stability, and some of them would find it. Can we really afford to lose trade partners?

Thank you for your response. I honestly thought you incapable of being so forthright.
The “so far” nothingness akin to his farting in the wind wrt the trim (buzz cut reorg) to Dept Of Education, USAID, was to be expected.

The DOJ retribution tour portends nastiness that borders on existential threat to our government. The whole shadow op of DOGE threatens when the DC attorney starts pursuing DOGE opponents. The FBI takes a hit. The IG’s take a hit, The J6 attorneys take a hit.
That there is not farting in the wind. It is taking a dump on civil servants, officers of the court, defenders of the law. Pergra to straddle the retribution line, neither for it nor against it. To be clear.

Absolutely priceless.

Agreed.

Well … except for some well designed bike packs made in chicago … by a company that hates morons like trump and elon.

Our provincial premier has already stated we will be leaning in to other markets and partnerships. Our incoming PM has used this event to highlight the stupidity of Trudeau not opening up our oil and gas to foreign markets, and relying on the US as our sole customer.

The damage is already done. You can’t threaten to destroy your closest ally’s economy then call it a nothing burger when it’s called off at the last minute.

Hundreds of billions of dollars are at stake. Why would anyone put all their economic eggs in Americas basket when it has shown itself to be an unreliable partner multiple times.

Trump said the decision was made because “we’re going to bring the companies back. We’re going to lower taxes for companies that are going to make their products in the USA and we’re going to protect those companies with strong tarrifs”.

So was he just joking?

Well, cheaters gonna cheat, liars gonna lie, bullies gonna bully and you know Orange Turd dun em all and has got his hand in as many pockets as he can.
A new theory showed up at the pub last night… What if the Orange Turd was the chosen puppet by the richest men on the planet? Musk bought a country at less than bargain basement prices. A buck or two a head for people is way cheaper than any other livestock on the farm.

According to windy, yes.

As was Fox News reporting how tariffs made America and Trump look strong, and how much of a win the whole thing has been for America and Trump. All embarrassing nonsense that is being crowed about for a bit of a joke.

No, he’s just full of shit. And a either a terrible bluffer, or is willing to beclown himself as a distraction for Elon Musk and his cronies.

Either way, he looks pretty feckless today.

Real “Who shit my pants?!” vibes going on here

And of course that is not what I said, you just made up something out of the words I put down so that you could have your mock outrage. No where in my statement did I ever mention about the 3000 dead, you just farted that out of your mouth onto the screen.

So for those with real reading comprehension, my comment was to compare the solidarity that we felt in the US after 9/11 to the growing solidarity in Canada now. It appears to me that Trump may become their rallying cry to get behind their leaders, ones that are quite fractured at the moment…
