North American Trade War

I am always amazed at how expensive alcohol is in Canada :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Thanks. My undergrad was in Economics but I feel ill prepared to make any predictions other than we will see reduced investment across the economy until things settle down….if they ever do.

Yeah the big thing is the unpredictability of all this. God knows what demands the King of America will make, whether they are reasonable or even feasible, and even if we meet them if he will remove the tariffs or just make new demands.

Could be a rough few years for sure…

I bought a single tall can of beer the other day and it was over $4.

And you guys are buying whole bottles of bourbon for $20!!

At this point I think we should cut off oil, electricity transmission and reduce the flow of the Columbia River. Treaties have no meaning to him so why should we be bound by them? Let’s go to war.

I certainly don’t disagree with what you are saying but I have to think this is going to cause some pain in the US as well. Clearly the pain ratio is higher on the Canadian side.

Gotta wonder what tariffs on lumber will do to the rebuilding costs in California.

And Florida/NC.

During COVID we were seeing prices like $120 for a single sheet of plywood. Before COVID it was around $28. Now it’s around 45-50.

Material costs could skyrocket, and even more importantly delay construction. Time is money, and if your project takes 10-15% longer due to delays in getting materials that cost adds up too.

I’m sure it will cause some pain down south. But we are a smaller population, smaller economy and we are more reliant on them than they are on us. I think we will blink first.

The vindictive asshole in me agrees with jsivvy and thinks hit them where it hurts: oil, water, power, raw materials. Though that will hurt Canadian producers too and cost jobs so who knows how this will all shake out. I just feel like as a whole we are in a very weak position right now to be dealing with this.

Who cares about California? They didn’t vote for me, why should I care about them?

Millions in California voted for Orange Jesus and probably a significant percentage in the burned areas.

I have read this as well. I also read that the toughest part of the task is convincing Trump that it’s his idea.

He really, honestly thinks that blanket tariffs are good for the USA. He’s a blithering idiot.

Blink on what? He isn’t really asking for anything. You are trying to negotiate with a malignant narcissist. He has no plan and his motivations are nonsensical.

Good luck with that.

Pretty sure most of those rebuilding after the hurricanes voted trump.

Didn’t carry the state. They didn’t try hard enough. Now daddy is taking his belt to them.

Sorry to hear this.

This is what I find perplexing. The original reason was border security. Canada best as I can tell agreed to some nebulous securing the border. Now I just think it’s because he said he would do it (and why staff is trying to avoid them)

It’s suboptimal.

I’d still be surprised if there are any meaningful tariffs anytime soon.

I’m sorry to hear that. Looking into my hazy crystal ball I’d imagine Canada will be sorted in relatively short order. Panama probably not

agreed, and really when it comes right down to it the the US/Canada border issues is peanuts relative to the US/ Mexico border. Canada reacted he said FU… at some point this sort of thing could backfire on him, hopefully soon.
