Also, there is now a group on Facebook called “The SwimRun Experience†and that is a place where you can find a team mate, get gear tips, learn about races, and meet like minded folks
Thanks Herbert, nice to have any database on this new sport. It would be nice to see the distance of the races though, and maybe links to the race websites? Otherwise have to keep copying and pasting to find ones that suit a persons race distance. Which brings up a question for you as you are the expert on these, do they have classifications like triathlon? What I mean is are there sprints, medium distance, ultra distance categories yet?
These races are much tougher to classify than in triathlon. Sprint events for one can be super short with as little as 4 miles total distance, or as much as 15 miles total distance. It actually usually depends on the distances of the main event next to it. They sprint distances actually rarely stand alone events, and are usually part of a bigger race. A way for race directors to let athletes get a “sample” of it without fully committing.
In Europe there are many races that are longer, ranging from 30km of running to 65km of running, and 4km of swimming to 10km of swimming, and all OTILLO races now have a shorter sprint event with them. But even the OTILLO races vary greatly, some suiting a more agile mountain goat, and others are more accomplished open water fish. Unlike in triathlon where a specific distance Olympic, Half or Full IM is “forced onto the land” in SwimRun the location is sought out, and the location then determines the distance. Whatever they may be.
Which events have solo competitor events? I really despise the teammate requirement
… Tried to convince Cali swim run guy to allow solo but he is so deusche persistent on keeping it. It’s as if they want it because it allows their slowness to qualify for otillo
Catawba is individual too. But I promise you, you are missing out.
I have never been part of a fraternity or similar group, and really like to be an individual, but this swim run team thing is awesome, and adds to the challenge.
I think the Italians have solo events: http://www.aquaticrunner.com/ The team aspect is great, but I’m with the above poster, I’ll look into if there’s solo category.
Didn’t know about the Victoria race. That’s cool, for those of us in the PWN we could do a decent little summer swin-run ‘season’ were we so inclined: Bellingham on 6/3, Victoria on 8/12, and Orcas Island on 9/23. That’s three races in a pretty small total area, although with ferries involved, the second two are nontrivial to get to.
Just wish there was less overlap. Bham swim-run is the same day as Vic 70.3 and Half IM Oliver.

Although NJ isn’t exactly a destination… I just found out the NJ one does have a solo option.
There’s a short race in Western PA, 1 mile swimming 5 miles running for the short course and 2 and 10, I think, for the long course. This one will have both solo and team options. There’s been an Xterra at the same park in the past. https://m.facebook.com/...p;id=323063091514016

Thank you for mentioning the PA race. I think the NJ race might be this: Garden State Swimrun. I’ll probably give this one a go, maybe the PA one (there’s a substantive price difference between the two). I’ll look forward to travelling without a bike.
