Normal shoe size vs Tri Bike shoe size

I need to get some new shoes as mine are a little too big and my foot is sliding a little giving me hot spots. I’ve tried searching here and on google but I want to know about tri shoes since you don’t wear socks and I haven’t been able to find much about it.

So what is the difference between your regular shoe size and your tri bike shoes? I plan on going to a lbs to try some on but I just want to get a general idea of how small I should go. I’m currently a 10.5 and my bike shoes are a 44 which is a 9.7 US according to shimano.

Also, does anyone know how Sidi’s fit compared to Shimano’s? I’ve googled this also and some people say they are bigger and some people say they are smaller. I figured most of these people are talking about road and mtb shoes, and not tri shoes.

I wear a 10.5 shoe, and also fit best in a 44 Shimano. (though 45’s also work, just not as snug). In Sidi’s, you’ll likely be a 45, as they tend to run a bit small, or true-to-size. As far as road shoes vs tri shoes, I haven’t really found much sizing difference overall. Sidi’s have a reputation for having a smaller toe-box.

What I meant about the difference between road and tri shoes is if your tri shoes are a little smaller since you don’t wear socks.

No difference for me, socks or sockless. 10.5 running shoes / normal shoes, and 44 or 45 (looser) with Shimano road or tri shoes. Hope this is helpful. I wouldn’t size down going sockless.

My road shoes are the same size as my tri shoes. I don’t think you need a smaller size because you’re going sockless. The best place to compare shoes to find the size you need online is at Art’s Cyclery through their Shoefitr tool. It will tell you what size you need based on what you’re currently wearing and show a 3D scan of the inside of the shoe.

I wear 10.5 running shoes (usually) and 44 in both Specialized road and Sidi tri shoes. So no, I didn’t size down but Sidis do run slightly smaller than many other shoes.

One more data point for you… 10.5 in most street/running shoes (except 11 in Nikes) = 45 in my regular road/MTB Sidis (always w/ socks) and a pair of Specs I had before that, and 44.5 in my Sidi T2s. I’d say Sidis tend to have a slightly slimmer fit that most other brands.

11s (46) in my Asics running shoes, 46 (11) in my Shimano cycling shoes. I don’t wear socks in either pair

My road shoes (Mavic something or other) are 43.5, while my tri shoe (Nike) is a flat 43. When I used a Nike shoe for road use, though, it was also a 43. It will likely depend on the make/model of the shoe.

To address he question about Sidi, I wear a 43.5 from them, road & tri.

Another data point…

10 street shoe size - D width on the Branmeister (sp?) device.
10.5 in Asics and Nike for running
44 in Shimano roand & mountain.
I just switched to 44.5 in Sidi with their crappy insoles - started getting numbness and hot spots in Sidi 44’s w/ Sole inserts.
