Some may know that Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty is a triathlete. He has raced Columbia, Eagleman, Kinetic Half and Savageman. The link is an article about him in today’s Washington Post.
The second picture of the slideshow shows him riding at Hains Point - a very flat, very fast three mile loop in DC that is very popular with triathletes and roadies.
I was in the same rack as the Mayor last year at Eagleman. Didn’t notice much until I saw Two Very Tough Looking Men keeping an eye on him, me, and everyone else in a fifty yard radius.
he ran the national marathon this spring. i was impressed, esp. since there was a half marathon option that a lot of fit politicians would have probably opted for.
He DNF’d Savageman. I was working the transition area and while he made it through the bike, his back was really hurting coming out of T2 and while he tried to continue to the run, he just couldn’t do it.
This guy is no quitter though and I expect to see him back there again in September to finish.
It is good to see a mayor of DC have some healthy habits and extra-curricular activities. Maybe Marion Barry should have though about triathlon and bike racing.
Ha! Marion Barry had other “sports” keeping him occupied!
It’s great to know that Fenty is involved in triathlons and other area races. My wife has a crush on him and takes his picture at every race we attend.
Adrian is a great guy. I worked for his parents Jan and Phil and brother Shawn at Fleet Feet in DC and they are the coolest family I have ever been around. Adrian used to come in to the shop all the time and chat, so it was a big thrill for everyone when he was elected mayor after some time as a DC counsel member.
Fenty will be back at SavageMan in September, and has vowed to take care of last year’s unfinished business. I’m impressed at the level of fitness he maintains while being mayor of a major American city. He’s no MOP or BOPer. He ran 3:40 +/- at Nations Marathon and 65 minutes at Cherry Blossom. That ain’t gonna get him a pro card, but is no joke.
He did make it up the Westernport Wall last year at SavageMan, but won’t be receiving a brick engraved with his name laid into the road because he didn’t finish the race. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USNPjKPOCnY
I’ve got to give AF props. I raced Kinetic Half last year and he looked pretty strong out there. Just to do that swim was enough for me to respect him. That was the year the water was crazy cold. One funny thing, after the race a lot of people stood in the lake for a psuedo ice-bath, his buddies were trying to talk him into it, but he wouldn’t go back in.
