Nominate one 'must see' movie, and a 'smokey'

Looking for suggestions for great movies I may have never got around to seeing.

Whilst at it, throw in a great movie that many may not be aware of.

Won’t complain if the rec’s are accompanied by a few words explaining why.

I’ll pick two from the '70s, not sure how well either is known.

Harold and Maude
Being There

I’m how to know what you’ve seen but:

oh brother where are thou
Peak Coen brothers comedy

I think I’ve mentioned The Changling with Angelina Jolie here before, but I think it is the best movie nobody seems to have seen or remember.

You chose the wrong The Changeling, sorry

If you want a “smokey” - that would have to be smokey and the bandit.

If you like action/comedy - one of Arnold’s - Commando. He has some great one-liners in it.

I added Jolie to the description because I think you pointed this out the last time I mentioned it. We’ve been hanging out here too long.

Snatch for the first

And one that I seem to be in the minority on - The Razor’s Edge from 1984.

ETA - And if you really want an outlier, Amelie

Commando is perhaps the most frequently quoted movie between my brother and I. We also frequently belt out the cheesy tune that signals the first instance of Alyssa Milano! It is solid gold in our eyes.

12 Monkeys
True Romance

Another vote for Oh Brother.

Ha!! I would have picked those two along with “A boy and his dog”… And perhaps “Hotel New Hampshire” to round out the afternoon…

I’ll go with solid Good. Memento. Rewatched recently and holds up.

Good/unique concept, well acted, keeps you engaged.

Arrival. Outstanding.

Cidade de Deus or City of God
It’s about the favelas in Brazil, filmed with almost all non-actors. It’s in Portuguese and should’ve been nominated for best foreign film Oscar. It was on a number of top 10 lists of the year that it came out. It’s a fantastic movie.

I am also partial to French cinema.

Breathless or À bout de souffle
The last metro or Le dernier métro
Too Beautiful for You or Trop Belle pour toi
Camille Claudel

Welcome to Collinwood - offbeat comedy about a group of bumbling thieves. Absolute kick ass cast. Micheal Jeter, William H. Macy, Luis Guzman, George Clooney , among others.

Once Upon a Time in America - Sergio Leone epic about NY gangsters in the 1920’s. Slow moving but if you like Leone’s style and Ennio Morricone’s music, you’ll dig this movie.

Must see is The Shawshank Redemption

Two lesser known but great;

Little Miss Sunshine - great ensemble cast, great acting, great story

Jacob’s Ladder - A rather mind-bending flick - best to watch with a person or two and discuss when over.

If you want a foreign movie, my favourite is a Yugoslavian WW2 “Walter Defends Sarajevo”. A bit of shooting action but the main riddle is who is Walter? Where is he? Can you meet him? Very good movie.

CODA, The holdovers

Breaking Away

Even harder to figure out who Walter is given the subtitles are also foreign to me - I should have learned more Croatian heritage like my brother.

I can see that it ties in nicely with your model building!

For whatever reason a video about requiem for a dream appeared on my social media feed, so, I recently re watched it.

Holy hell that was depressing, but I would recommend watching it. I think I’ll show that to my kids one day as a good ‘anti drug’ movie.

Three Days of the Condor - unique 70s spy flick with Robert Redford. Faye Dunaway, Max von Sydow, Cliff Robertson

Nothing But a Man - fantastic low budget 1964 movie set against the backdrop of the civil rights struggles
