It’s taken awhile, however I’ve finally got rid of the IPOD on my long runs. Reading some of George Sheehan’s books have really helped.
And actually I’m really starting to enjoy the runs without the music…

I’m with you on this one. I’ll take it only occasionally. I just started to get so sick of my music. 2000+ songs and nothing good to listen to… sort of like cable TV, IMO.
maybe i’ll try it. I gave up music awhile ago…but never leave home without my podcasts
Also in the spirit of Sheehan, switch to beer for your long runs.
Sheehan was one of the originals. I remember reading his column in RW and reading his books but mostly I remember racing with him in Monmouth County NJ. Just a few weeks ago while I was on a bike ride along the Jersey Shore I looped around Lake Takanasee and stopped to stop at the Sheehan memorial and remember back when my legs were fresh and we were all fast.
The man was a genius ahead of his time…

Doesn’t reading during your long runs strain your eyes?
Funny timing on this thread as just yesterday I ran without the iPod for the first time all year…not sure why. Leaning towards boredom with my 1000 songs I suppose. God forbid I have to be alone with my own thoughts for an hour…

doing the same thing…is kind of nice and peaceful to not have the music; it turns into white noise after awhile anyways as sometimes a song would end and I wouldn’t recall any of it.
I shed the iPod and fuel belts for the most part his year, i enjoy running much more now. Occasionally i’ll listen to music, but its rare.
I gave the music up years ago. It’s amazing how many of lifes little problems I’ve solved for myself at mile 10 of a good run.
Been without for about a year. Es bueno.
Tried using it a couple of weeks ago and it drove me nuts. The transformation is complete.
I stopped running with music a couple years ago. For me, I got overly annoyed with it. Headphones, carrying cases, pockets, the wire rubbing.
It brought more stress than relaxation.
My ipod crapped out on mile 1 of my ten mile run today. I’d like to say the run turned into a spiritual experience as a result, but in reality I was just pissed off.
