Nitrous oxide and endurance sports

i know a guy who owns a nutition supplement store. he wants me to take a nitrous oxide supplement, and he pretty much guarantees a noticable improvement in endurance. anyone heard nitrous oxide? or what it does?

I tried some once. It was really funny.

I drink NO Explode before all my work-outs. Does it work? Not sure, but it can’t hurt.

Are you by chance asking about the AMP NO stuff that I saw GNC advertising for in Velonews past couple issues?

“it’s a balloon filled with the gas called nitrous oxide, laughing gas,
hi hi hi hi, ha ha,
but this is no laughing matter,
cameras ready, prepare to flash”

nice

oh…u mean the stuff in the red container at Vitamin Shoppe…

I think the theory behind the nitRIC oxide (nitrous oxide is N2O and is an analgesic/laughing gas) supplements is that NO is an active neurotransmitter in the body that causes vasodilation and has some effects on cellular uptake of nutrients. I think the way they’re supposed to work is that the supplement boosts NO in the blood stream, both providing better blood perfusion to muscles and boosting nutrient uptake.

I think I read that somewhere, but you should probably look it up before taking it.

I took it for a while in college when I was doing a lot of lifting and thought it helped a little during lifting sessions. As for endurance…?

Yea, Nitric oxide not nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is gas at room temperature. You had me going there.

If your so inclined save yourself some money and just use L-Argenine. It is the primary ingredient in the NO supplements. I don’t think the NO effect will help with endurance but L-Argenine has been linked to raising HGH.

nitrous oxide, take viagara or whip its, youll have more fun.

I just had a total flashback to 1995. That is a pretty good remix. The original was always a little slow.

It’ll give you a little amped up buzz not unlike caffeine. I suppose if nothing else it could offer a placebo effect if you need a jolt. But confirm whether it has creatine (I know some of the NO drinks do). My personal experience with creatine and endurance sports can be summed up in one word: cramping. Anything over about 90 minutes of exertion and I’d cramp like crazy in the calves. Bad news.

Have a cup of coffee or a natural energy filled fruit smoothie. Do not get dependent on supplements. Just my opinion though.

Bought some of these at Worldmarket yesterday…going to give them a try next weekend for my long ride…see if they give me any boost
.

HAHAHAHAHHA !!!

HIPPIE CRACK.

I killed several million brain cells in the parking lot of Grateful Dead shows sucking down whip-its by the case. What was I thinkin!!!

NO-Xplod has a small amount of creatine…most of their creatine is saved for CellMass (I think thats what its called), the post workout supplement.

Naughty little kiddies…

Nitric oxide (NO) is a vasodilator. In some situations, it can be helpful (NO is beneficial for folks with arterial stents as it prevents cellular adhesion to a vascular graft) but, it can also be harmful (NO is a cytokine in articulating joints, like the knee, and is thought to recruit all sorts of really bad molecules like metalloproteinases and aggrecanases; which are basically proteins that chop away at other proteins). So, if found in your cardiovascular system, it may act like omega 3 fatty acids, but if found in your knee (where there’s articular cartilage), it could mean arthritis.

It’s all about moderation, right? Unless you have high cholesterol or other cardiovascular problems and your doctor prescribes you some NO supplements, you might want to just stick with a healthy, well balanced diet.

I use NO-Xplode before lifting weights. I can totally tell the difference! The caffiene and NO is without a doubt in full effect in my system when I lift. I do two scoops and then one scoop of Cellmass afterwards. I did do NO-Xplode once before a ride, and I had a great ride(about 60 miles) but I didn’t continue to do it because I was worried about getting dependent on it for my riding…maybe I was over reacting, but I do give that stuff my full endorsement for lifting weights! But clydesdales probably put more stock in that then most tri folks. It’s my goal every off season to get back enough strength to rep 275 on bench press for 4 sets of 6…then I get skinny again and loose my strength and shrink back to 200-205, but come winter it’s back on NO-Xplode and lifting. I don’t know if the NO is the big key in that stuff or if it’s the caffiene, but probably both. I use 5hour energies for help on race days and training days, although I have to be careful since 5hour and expresso gel’s don’t seem to mix well in my tummy…

Get some First Endurance Pre Race. That’s pretty much all you need.
