Any one have experience with NiteRider MiNewt bike lights in the cold and rain? Can you comment on reliability and durability. Specifically, the 200 LED. My morning commute just got longer, earlier, darker and colder and I’m thinking about getting this light for my visibility. I already have enough lights to make sure others see me.
I spent a while in the search function trying to find bike light answers, but didn’t find this one.
Yeah mini newt is ok. But this is WAY better. I have been commuting for more than a decade. This is THE light. If you want bright but not spend a fortune.
There are handlebar mounts, get a charger, and the batteries. $50 and you will have a system that is brighter than car headlights on high beams. Cyclists will constantly stop you to ask where you got it, and when you tell them its $35 they think you are lying.
There are other posts about it on the forum somewhere. Someone even took pics next to their car with highbeams if you dont believe me.
Thanks. I have seen those threads and thought about doing that (and still may). My main question is about durability. I want something that will tolerate cold and rain - even if it sits in my -20F Wisconsin garage for a few days this winter.
No problem with rain. I commute every day in Portland OR. It gets wet.
I dont know about cold. I rode it last year in the coldest weather this place has gotten in decades. It was fine. But not cold by midwest standards. I doubt it ever got below 20 degrees.
Did you get the batteries? They are not American standard size. They makes some very slick handlebar attachments too with velcro. I think they cost like $5. You can get those anywhere though.
If you put it on strobe, what out for mad car drivers. But I like riding on high, and if someone gets in my way I flick it to strobe with a click. It gets their attention really fast.

could you replace the clear lens with a red lens and have this be an ultra bright taillight?
I think I will do that this year. I want to put a lens on it that diffuses it more like a fresno or something for rear facing. That way i can be seen from the side too.

any idea on where those photos are comparing this light to a vehicles headlights?
I get about an 1.5 hrs on high steady. You would get more on med or low or flashing. Plenty for both ways on my commute. I carry an extra battery too. This does not dim at all when running low. It goes from full brightness to off when dead. No warning. So keep an extra battery. I have four, I keep two in a drawer fully charged in case I forget. I use the other two most of the time.

i use something very similar for 5am running. quick turn on and flash across windshield always notifies early commuters of my presence. i then shine it down at my feet. can usually get close to a full season out of one battery with this limited usage but never thought of mounting it on my handlebars. Kudos!!!
Now I just need to find some rechargeable batteries and that mount you listed. awesome.
I got a Magicshine a few weeks ago and it is remarkable. It is just as bright as $400 units my friends use. I use it for riding off road and cyclocross practice and the helmet mount allows use without a helmet for xc skiing and trail running.
It’s an amazing light, I can’t speculate on durability

I couldn’t find the mounts, etc. Are you getting them from the same site? Where?
