Seem pretty similar, anyone know if you can stand a tribike upright in the back? (55cm standard medium size)

with the front wheel off, you can stand a bike up in the fit. in fact, I can fit three and gear…
no idea about the versa.

Yeah, guess I should have been more specific. I know you can in the Fit from reading on here, but I don’t know about the Versa. It’s got 7 less cubic feet of space, but some of that is due to the seats being a bit further back for more leg room in the rear seating. I just couldn’t find anything on the height of the cargo area with the seats folded down.
John
I was at same decision point last year. Fit can hold my assembled tri bike lying flat in back (back seats down of course), or standing up in back or middle (magic seats up, of course) with front wheel removed. However, its very tight, due to length of aerobars and height of seat - I have 36’’ inseam and am 5’11’'. No way would I be able to fit a second bike in there without taking both wheels off. I could see how someone smaller could fit easily fit in 2 bikes w/o front wheels in the back. FWIW, nearly same amount of room as my 2007 Rav4 with seats down. If I were to buy another car, I’d go for the Element.
If I recall correctly the Versa has smaller rear opening and rear seat doesn’t lie flat. No middle seat option. Also, last years Versa got worse mileage than Fit, don’t know about this years.

Yeah, I looked at the Element, but it’s ~ $5000 more than the Fit (Minimum), and gets 10mpg less.

I’ll be looking at the Fit as well (when my 10 yr old accord dies). The element is ok - but awfully clunky in my opinion.
With just about any car you can fit a bike between the front seat and the back seat with the front wheel off.
Toyota Matrix is another good option too. That is what I have. I can’t fit a bike standing up with the backseat lowered, but I can put it on the side with the front wheel on. And it makes 33-35mpg on highway.
Well Since SQW drives a Honda Fit, I will blindly follow Simon Whitfield
I recently looked at both cars, as well as a couple others and settled on an '09 Honda Fit Sport (Manual). I can fit two of my bikes on the inside standing upright without the front wheels on. I have to angle the bikes, but they fit. I could not stand my bikes up in the Versa without taking off the seatpost and saddle (center of bb to top of saddle is 790mm). The Fit was the only care I was able to stand bikes up in. I dont think it would be possible to fit a Tri bike in the back with aero bars on it, it would just be too long, unless you scooted the front seat way up… Even after I added the roof rack I still average over 35mpg!

So…
You can fit two bikes standing up in the Fit, yet still put them on a roof rack?
John
a couple of years ago, i looked at both, but didn’t bring bikes w/me.
the way that the fit’s seats folded down created more room top-to-bottom than the versa.
that said, why not try it out? i enjoyed testing both cars. they were both too hot to buy at the time - dealers were totally jacking up the prices - but both looked like good options.
Perhaps we can get a list going of all vehicles that you can fit your bike in standing up with both wheels on. We all know the Element can do it, but what else?

Yeah, I just haven’t had a weekend free enough in the last couple months to go test driving and ducking sales peoples pitches…

Try taking the bikes off the top. You should be able to go faster than
35 that way.

I bought a Versa two years ago. Unless the fit has changed, the Versa has more cargo room with the seats folded down. It does not have the magic seat that folds up in the center, but I was pretty sure that my bike (59 cm) would not fit in that position with aero bars. I can put it in the back of the fit without taking the wheels off, but I have to take the seat off to fit it in the opening (I have a 36" inseam).
One other thing to consider, the fit has slightly better gas mileage and got significantly better reliability ratings (I think a 9 compared to a 5).
You may want to just bring a ruler with you and check thsese cars out. I’m happy with the Versa, but if I could fit two bikes in the middle of the fit, I would trade in a heart beat.
We settled on a 2003 Matrix. I know the question was asked about the Fit vs the Versa, but somebody else chimed in about the matrix so I wanted to give it my vote as well. When looking at the vehicles in this category, I found that the older Matrix has more cargo space than the new one, but the newer Fit has more room than the old style.
I test fit 56 P3C, and it can fit on its side without taking the front wheel off, or I can take the front wheel off and stand it up and secure it along the pasenger side side leaving the bulk of the cargo space for another bike or gear, etc… However, I have to drop my seat to get it to fit due to the rear bottle holder.
We have also fit my 29’er in there on its side with the front wheel removed on several occasions.
If you decide to look at the Matrix, the Pontiac Vibe is the same car. Its made by Toyota for Pontiac and they are usually a bit less.
Dodge Ram 2500, Also holds the wife, kids, dog, and all the supplies you could possibly need/want.
the old style scion XB will fit a bike in it upright, seen it.
those cars look retarded but are perhaps the best utility/dollar car that ever existed =)

My wonderful Golden Retriever takes up the back on quite a few trips! If its just me, then the bikes are inside, but normally I head to bike races with at least one other person, and a couple bikes each, so the rack is needed.
2 words: Vanagon Westfalia.
You can stand 3 tri-bikes up inside a Vanagon. Its your do everything, go anywhere, ultra SUV ‘lifestyle’ vehicle. So what if it won’t do more than 70 mph on the freeway. When you get to where you are going you can pop the top and take a nap, stow 2 bikes up top, 2-3 inside and have an adventure. I have fit 3 bikes inside my van and two up top on the rack with nothing removed except the front wheels for the bikes on top. Or 2 bikes and surfboards on top with wife and dog and gear inside…
