Niles Triathlon (MI) changes

couple of big changes for the Niles Triathlon this year.

the 2007 event continues with the same date it has held for years, Saturday, September 1st. this is the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. the race is being managed by a new/different Optimist Club in Niles, the Riverfront Optimists. two distances are offered, an Intermediate 1.5KS/40KB/10KR, and a Super Sprint 200YS/10KB/2.5KR.

The Triple Threat Triathlon Club of South Bend is supplying lots of expertise and support. i see the race returning to big participation numbers this year, similar to when it was the final event in the old MGPS.

any prize money for either race ?

Will this event be a USAT sanctioned event? I haven’t done Niles in quite a few years…thought about coming out this year.

my understanding is…no prize money…just the normal kudos for a race well done.

yes, the race is USAT sanctioned.

hope to see you there.

what better way to spend your Saturday?

any team need a bike rider?! If so, pm me…

Im in for Niles. Was a cool race last year.

I’m in! I like the fact that they bumped it up to a full international distance race.

cool. see you there tomorrow.

for anyone sitting on the fence…weather should be picture perfect. the latest water temp check puts it at 76. overnight temps in the low 50’s but with an 8:30 start time for the long course and 9:00 for the ssprint…should be ideal with temps up into high 60’s or so by the start times.

Another perfect day for racing Saturday. Nice and cool in the morning, and not too hot for the run.

I think they needed to measure the water temp again, it was pretty warm out in the lake. I couldn’t believe how well marked the swim course was though. There were buoys everywhere! And the course was set up so that the rising sun wasn’t a problem.

The new bike course was also very well marked, and staffed with a ton of volunteers and police. Except for a few small sections the pavement was almost perfect also. It’s not as hilly as Three Rivers, but it definitely wasn’t flat.

The run course was very nice. It felt very familiar, even with the added length. It ended up being a couple miles too long for me, since Mike Lavely passed me at about mile 4. Oh well. It was a great race.

The post race food was good, and they had a ton of give aways. I think just about everyone got something.

I am glad to hear that the race is growing, and I hope to be back for many years to come.

quite the finish with you only a couple strides back from Mike.

you got the swim prem and a 2nd OA…very nice!

BTW…what did you think of the Notre Dame women’s swim team showing up…all 23 of them or whatever ?

I definitely liked the ND team suits.

Eric,

You definately pushed me out there. I didnt think I was going to catch you. I was running full throttle to try to catch you/stay away from you. Nice race.

I just have to say Im glad the ND team wasnt doing the international distance, as I dont like getting killed by girls in the water.
