Nike Vomero alternative

I’ve been running in Nike Vomero’s for a bunch of years now, specifically because of the cushiness/comfort and the big toe box. I always purchased the Version xx that was the previous version and probably paid on average $80-$90/pair. Since COVID, I’ve paid above that average but for the last few months I either see them for $150 or they are not available at all. So what alternatives are out there that are a similar shoe (that have the cushiness and big toe box)?

TIA!

Sorry I’m not going to be any help but I’ll be watching here. They were also my shoe of choice but have been difficult to come by. Just a heads up, I bought what I think are the most recent model and it seemed like they changed the back of the shoe to me. Felt weird on my Achilles so I returned them. The fact I paid full price also factored in to that decision.

I cant answer your question but have the same issue. I have been buying vomeros off ebay.

Following. I’m in the same boat. I have used Vomeros for about 15 years or even longer. Every time I found them somewhere in my size, I would purchase the entire inventory. Since they altered the heel I have been looking for a similar shoe (I don’t need the wide toe box, just the cushion due to foot surgery). Unfortunately, without any success.

Lots of options.

Brooks glycerin
Hoka Bondi, clifton
Asics Nimbus, cumulus maybe the noosa tri (going to be a different experience but this is a great shoe)
NB 880 maybe the 1080 (going to be a different experience)
361 Spire
saucony triumph or endorphin speed
adidas ultraboost or supernova

that’s a list to get yo started

As has been said over and over on here: Your best bet is head to your local running store.
Talk to them about how often you run, what your average duration is, what you want the shoes to be to your running life (aka daily driver, go fast shoe, tempo run shoe, long run only or long run plus daily driver type shoe) and then try on 3-8 pair. If you like how it feels set it aside. When you get 2-3-4 pair you really like put pair A on one foot pair B on the other. Keep the one you like the best on then do that with another shoe.

I too was a big Vomero fan, but was then talked into trying the Invincible a few months back by one of our staff who is training for a double… completely blown away with the cushion, comfort, and speed of the Invincible. It’s everything you like about the Vomero times 10

I was about the make the same suggestion. It’s the same foam used in the Next% (no carbon plate obviously) in a thicker and wider shoe. Same bounce as the Next% and hopefully will last many miles. I’m only 70 miles into mine.

One downside is the price, which is $180 retail. I bought mine for $130 from a Running Warehouse sale.

IIRC the foam, while ZoomX foam, is layed up differently than in the next %.

I hang my head in shame for not listing the Invincible. It’s a pretty sweet shoe.

I’m a fan of my Invincible. It’s super cushy, and is the most gentle on my arthritic ankles - even moreso than Hoka Bondis.

Mine has 300+ miles now, and it seems to be super durable as well. It feels like new to me still, I wouldnt’ be surprised if I could hit 1000+ miles with this thing with it still working well.

Again, the caveat with this one and all the maxisupershoes is that it’s friggin’ slow. All that cush sucks out your energy, even if it’s rebounding to some degree. My last Vomero was 9 years ago, so I can’t comment on comparing to current-gen ones, but for the Invincible and the Bondi6s have the most speed-sucking effect of any of my shoes. It’s like I age back 15 years when I switch back to Vaporfly or Endorphin speeds on interval day, I’m so much faster.

But alas, due to arthritis, the Invincible has become my go-to shoe to for most of my weekly miles.

I’m surprised to hear that the invincible is slow… I’m notably faster in them than the Vomero, and WAY faster in them than in the Clifton… those things are like cinderblocks in terms of rebound! Though I’ve never had the experience of Vaporfly or the like… I’m also a terrible and very out of shape runner!!

They are SLOW.

It’s not just me - go on youtube and listen to pretty much any reviewer of them. All of them say this is an ‘easy day shoe only’ - which is their politically correct way of saying ‘it’s slow as mud.’

They’re not slow just compared to supershoes, either. I have a pair of NB1080s which are well-regarded as a great ‘all-rounder’ type of shoe, and I still feel like I’m on steroids when I run with them compared to the invincibles, it’s so obviously faster. (Alas, the price I pay is that I get worsening ankle arthritis pain from the 1080s - so bad that they’ve been relegated to walking wear for me despite being near-new.)

I don’t think there’s any real way to get around a super cushy shoe being slow - if it’s soaking up tons of road impact like a giant pillow, there will be a cost. I still do my speedwork in fast shoes (Endorphin speed & Alphafly) once per week as I can still do that without progressive pain, but in the off-season I’ll play it even safer and run in a big Hoka Bondi X Carbon which has less of a speed penalty but more stiffness.
