Can someone who has trained in both compare and contrast the shoes for me. I currently run in Adidas Boston Climacools.
Comfort, road pounding, injury prone, weight, lifetime, etc.
Thanks

I have used both of these and really only like the free. Both the Luna Racer and trainer did not fit my feet, and just ripped them up. The Free’s really let your feet move in a more natural way.
I am 6’1" and 170 lbs, I really only run on paved roads, but sometimes run on trails. I am not really prone to injuries, but I have had a slight case of PF before I started using the shoe. It’s worth a try, but I hated the Lunas. Another plus about the Free’s is because its not about padding in the shoes you can wear them till you put holes in them!
Exactly. I really wanted to try the Lunars, but if I can get 2-4 times more miles out of the Frees that makes it worth trying to me.

I really don’t understand the hate for LunaRacers. They are light at 5.5 ounces, yet very responsive. Lunas are noticably soft at footfall, which seems to take away some pounding. Do they really tear up everyone’s feet?
Simply put, it is a freaking fast shoe. And they’re HOT! I would totally have their flourescent green babies.
I’ve train in Free 3.0 for years and in lunar racer for about 8 months. If you’re looking for cushioning, Lunar racer wins hands down against any light wight flats. I went through 2 pairs of Lunar racers, both of them fell apart on the top side by the flywires; free lasted longer in my experience. Free 3.0 is a bit heavier but not much. IMHO Lunar is one of the best running shoes Nike ever came out with. I’ve moved on to VFF for some months now; also got a pair of Mizuno Universe 3 (lighter than lunar racer) as my race day flats.
Ive run in both and went with the Lunaracer over the frees for a few reasons.
One, the free seems to be much more of a short distance shoe for me where as the lunar can be used from 5k to a marathon with no problem. This is mainly due to the cusion that the lunaracers provide. And cushion is not a bad thing you get great rebound with these shoes to propel you into your next stride.
Two, the frees were just too free, I want at least some support on the longer runs or my feet would fall apart.
Three, the frees on trails get things stuck between the folds in the sole and u feel every bit of it and you dont have that problem with the lunars.
Four, who doesn’t want a shoe that weighs only 5.5oz and is extremely breathable.
I have about 60miles on the lunaracers now and whenever I run more than 6 miles with them they do start to rip up the arch of my feet. But the easy way I fixed that problem was starting to run with socks on. Now that I run with socks, I dont have that problem anymore.
I weigh close to 200 lbs and I have no issues with the lunar racers wearing out more quickly than any other shoe I’ve ever purchased. I usually plan to purchase about two pairs of trainers per year, depending on my mileage. The lunar soles and uppers have met that schedule.
I train in the Nike Free 3.0 and Luna Racers. They a totally different shoes … one I use to strengthen my feet (3.0s) the other I use for all my other running. The Luna Racers have a good deal more cushion so are the choice for long runs. I generally don’t run more than about 1 hr or 8 miles in the 3.0s. I choose the Luna Racers because they allow me to make use of the foot strength I gain with the 3.0s. I like that they are light and well cushioned and they fit me well (I have narrow foot). The only negative experience with the Luna Racers was having my Achilles rubbed raw and bloody. But once I developed a callus in that spot, all was well. Here’s a picture http://twitpic.com/g2z6w
I agree that they are light shoes, and very responsive, but I look for shoes that I can run without socks. This is one of the most important things I look for. Now I can’t run without socks with the Free’s but I also didn’t get the blisters I did with the Luna’s. But I also do must of my running in my Newton’s, I only switched to the Free’s the past month and a half due to a tendon injury.
