Night Sweats (2)

Anybody get night sweats? I find myself waking up soaked in the middle of the night when I am training a lot or recovering from hard efforts (races). I am a healthy 30 year old male with a healty diet. Not only is it kind of gross, but it also disrupts my sleep. What’s the deal?

Only if I’m sick or my wife has turned the thermostat up. Any boost in metabolism from exercise should mostly be occurring immediately post-exercise and tail off over time. You’re not eating a big meal before bed are you?

Yes! After IM distance especially. After each of my 3, have woke up completely soaked around 2 - 3 a.m.

Maybe it’s not sweat. What are you dreaming?

this has been raised a few times on the forum. (don’t worry, I’m not gonna be an ass and tell you to use the search function). Last time I remember it being raised there were a lot of people in the same boat. Yes, when i train a lot I have night sweats. I think even Rapp chimed in that he had them too.

I can’t remember if anyone ever found a physiological reason for it, but it happens to a lot of people.

Cool. Thanks for the reassurance. I did a brief search and didn’t find anything, but admittedly didn’t dig.

Could be any number of things, ranging from home temperature to a serious health condition. I had a short bout of it a year and a half ago and I couldn’t tie it to any one thing. At the time I was training, but that was really no different than before it started or after it went away. If it persists I would reccomend getting a checkup, but if it’s anything like I experienced it may just go away.

It can also be a thyroid or iodine issue. Thyroid regulates body temp so if your levels get out of whack, perhaps iodine deficiency, that can also cause issues. May be only temporary and balance is later restored.

Dude, almost every night. Some nights worse than others. Sucks.

I just had my bloodwork checked (again), everything normal.

Every interval day. Showering right before bed helps.

Yea me too. Bloodwork is totally A-OK. My sheets on the otherhand, notsomuch.

Totally. If I had unlimited time and income, I would shower just before bed each night and have my sheets changed daily.

I actually started sleeping by myself so that I can move over to a dry spot when one side gets too wet…real nice.

I sleep with a fan blowing on me even in the dead of winter because I otherwise get horrible sweating.

I have started getting it bad over the last few months as well. I can go to bed freezing cold, cover up only half of my body and I still wake up at the exact same time (around 1:30am) completely drenched. It doesnt happen every night, usually only 1 - 2 times/week. Every internet search always says it could be a symptom of cancer, never thought to relate it to training. Think I might start marking it on my training calendar and see if there is any pattern.

Well, that’s very interesting. I always wake up at the same time too–1:30 pretty much nails it +/- 10 minutes. Huh.

I usually get night sweats when I’m in a heavy training cycle. It seems like my body’s way of processing all the training stress. When I first got back into shape in 2009, I constantly had them. I was in the process of dropping about 15 pounds during that time.

Gee… Hmmmm

Lets see… Heavy exercise training… increased deficiency in Iodine, cause Thyroid imbalance… Body temp regulation out of whack and VIOLA - Night Sweats.

I find when I supplement with Iodine I have no night sweats during heavy training cycles where I used to feel I was doing night swimming

Yeah, ok, but wouldn’t that thyroid imbalance show up in bloodwork? What about those of us struggling with this with normal bloodwork. I do eat salt like a freak though…

Over-consumption of iodine (from too much salt intake, cough cough Saltstick/E-caps/etc) can be just as bad for you, preventing the thyroid from producing the proper hormones. I read that a human requirs about 1 teaspoon of iodine over his entire lifetime… so you daily intake of salt, eggs, milk, potatoes etc is probably more than enough.

On the whole, people in the US are more likely to be at risk of excess intake rather than a deficiency.

And yes, I’ve had the night-sweats as well during heavy training weeks (15+ hours.)

I do not take any supplements. I just try to eat well, stay hydrated and get my sleep.
