Nick Bare goes sub 2:40 for CIM marathon

Not necessarily during this cycle but I recall him doing some blood panels and releasing those results. I didn’t bother to look at them because I don’t have a clue what I’d be looking at. There will always be skeptics now to any impressive performance and that’s just the way the world (sadly so).

Personally, I have a faster marathon PR than him (humble brag) but am far beyond those performance thanks to age & injuries but his & others dedication and determination are inspirational and give me some motivation when it’s lacking internally.

Came across this thread and for the life of me, do not understand all the hoopla around some age grouper who is not even at the pointy end? Nothing against the guy, he is one of those self promoters who is trying to find a lucrative niche in sports, and selling things. But it looks to me like he is just a good athlete(maybe doped, maybe not) but well below the usual folks we start threads about on here.

I suppose if Hulk Hogan ran a 2;40 marathon I would take notice, but he aint no Hulk. Dozens of AG’ers in our sport that wipe the floor with this dude, and virtually anonymous here. Once in awhile one breaks through with a “real” top performance, and those are fun to banter in and recognize for their top achievements. But a self promoting MOP athlete, just dont get it…

no way Monty.

There aren’t loads of 200 lb guys who can bench way over 300 lbs running 2:40 marathons.

I’ve lost 100 lbs off my bench press max since I started endurance training. I don’t know how he does it (well, maybe I do).

I have a good friend who worships this guy. I think Nick is a good athlete, but I have to also wonder if he is aware of the disservice he is doing. My friend has an athletic background, is very fit, but it’s mostly gym muscle. Nick has given him a false hope, that he can also be a respectably performing endurance athlete. I’ve never seen anyone work so hard, and keep coming up short. DNF’s at Ironman (he did get one finish just under cut-off) and marathons. He doesn’t want to loose his muscle and strength. He puts in the miles and long runs etc, but it just isn’t working. I’ve preached about serving two masters, and all that crap, and have tried to convince him that he could loose 40 pounds and run like the wind… but very often his reply has been yeah but Nick …. Lalalalalala….😵‍💫. Last month I tried to pace him to a marathon PR. His training was impressive, and I thought he had a chance. But it really hurt, seeing this big guy struggling so bad at race pace, and dropping out at the half. Even after the race it was yeah but Nick…… and I was like fuck Nick, if he was there I would have punched him in the face. Well ok, maybe not, the dude could bench press my skinny ass to moon. But, my friend is clean as a whistle, and this whole Nick Bare thing has only set him up for repeated disappointment.

Ok, not sure I care much how much a guy benches as related to how he runs. Did he do this bench the day before running 2;40? Because if not, then doing things like this in opposite time frames, well meh…

If I were to take an interest in someone lifting heavy and running fast(and I have) it would be to follow this guys exploits. Think 2;04 is a lot faster than 2;40, and shows the range that is possible…

no, he’s currently benching over 300.

There is nothing wrong with the way you view it. I actually get it. I can play the bassoon at a near professional level. and can run a sub 3 marathon (apparently my plantar do not agree with that but that’s irrelevant). Saying that noone can play the bassoon and run at my level is an obvious gimmick (I should start a youtube channel, I’m sure I could get 6 or 7 followers). What Bare does is not THAT gimmicky but from a purity standpoint I get why some might view it that way. 2:40 isn’t that great when you consider people run 2:04.

I’ll only be impressed if your youtube basoon running channel involves the star wars cantina song.

he has also deadlifted 600lb so this is a very impressive feat, go to the gym and report to us your numbers to get an understanding maybe instead of putting it down

I know right? It’s amazing that he still doesn’t get it. The whole point of this is that Bare is doing strength and this sort of running at the same time. Ryan Hall did his strength after he stopped running marathons competitively. Although I thought I saw pretty recently on IG that he posted he was going to get back to competitive running while trying to maintain his strength. If people think this thing is easy, just take a look at Skipper’s hyrox effort.

Really?? I have’nt put anyone down here, just commenting on the comparisons between weight lifters and runners. So you are saying that I now have to go to the gym and try and lift massive amount of weight, in order to have an opinion about this???

For the record I benched 280 in college during my swimming days, and then became a faster runner than Nick(and lot faster swimmer and biker), can I now have your permission to comment?

Can’t we all just recognize the particular argument in this case is that someone is just really asking someone else to stay off their lawn?

Those are English horns.

The three double reed instruments:

Oboe, English horn and bassoon. They’re Often confused.

You have permission to comment and we have permission to think your comments are dumb.

You have permission to comment and we**(I)** have permission to think your comments are dumb. ////

Thank you…

I used to go to YMCA gym with a lot of old folks bragging what they used to do, but never having proof, and current fitness/strength of and 8 year old female

I imagine you fit in real nice with that group…

Lucky for me that I have 45 years of mostly recorded triathlon/multisport/individual racing to look back on. My college weight lifting is problematic to certify, but when I was 40 and did my big 40 hour birthday set, ESPN did capture my 40 bench reps of my body weight (165lbs) in 4 minutes(try it sometime, not as easy as it may sound)…But yes, perhaps now days I’m a shell of my former self, but still pushing the limits of my AG without the help of the HRT docs…

I think the majority of people here who think he is on gear are the ones who never heard of him until he competed in triathlon and endurance sports. It’s easy to take one look at his YouTube thumbnails or IG post of his physique and claim not natty without seeing his documentation on social media and YT 8-10 years prior. My opinion, from following him all these years, is that he has too much integrity and dedication/consistency to use gear and not disclose it. No one has to agree with me though.

To explain…

  1. Monty was a damn good athlete.
  2. Monty does not think he needs health and beauty tips from some young YouTube, social influencer.
(Who is also a pretty good runner and weightlifter).

It is OK that you young guys are NOT super duper athletic.
(I myself was never nearly as good as I had hoped to be).

It is also OK that your wives, girlfriends and boyfriends are the breadwinners.

It is OK that you guys admire the health and beauty advice that Nick delivers.

I hope your wives, girlfriends and boyfriends admire the things you do to stay “fit”!

It’s just that this is not the way that men of Monty’s generation (or mine) think.

This is why we are mystified by this type of thread.

How in the hell do you have any idea about a random strangers level of ‘integrity’? This topic and this guy has been done to death, but as always there are people who think him along with the Rock are natty and nothing said will change their mind.

If you know you know, spend enough time around gyms and you will also…
