We will have an updated story following today’s City Council meeting in a bit.
And now the shakedown is complete at the price which was initially floated. Saw this coming a mile away, that number wasn’t arbitrary.
What’s pretty crazy is let’s assume Ironman gets 5000 racers at 900ea. That’s 4.5 million. Giving up essentially 1/3 of that being blackmailed by a city is pretty disastrous.
We can all say, ya they likely keep a pretty decent amount of cash on the balance sheet, but if they really are giving out 1.6 that’s an epic amount of a shakedown.
Now…can Ironman pay the money, put on the race and take the city to court and get it back? I hope so. But what a mess.
Ironman Nice is dead. Nice’s triathlon history will die very fast. But hello
Marseille. . .
Heh, ya. Marseille has a pretty bad reputation for violent crime though.
I have a former colleague in Toulon, which is also on the coast not too far from Nice. I suspect a city like that would be eager to have major events there.
The mayor really was just being pretty stupid here.
Toulon has a significantly better rugby team than Nice or Marseille. Allez Toulon! Or Toulouse.
And not very nice
< c’mon! It was just sitting there!!! >
I think with barely 4 months to go, Ironman had to suck up the blackmail as they likely can’t find a replacement venue and customers have made plans. They will see the the Ville de Nice in Court for sure to settle on the cash delta, but having things in a grid lock as the last two months of the qual season are on deck and everyone already made plans just leaves too much uncertainty in the air when there is already uncertainty about 2027 and 2029 (and now 2028)
The dirty little secret is that any and every race/event that uses Public Roads or Space has to apply for Permits EVERY year. Just because you are IRONMAN, or the Boston Marathon, or whoever with a “contract” or 130 years of history behind you . . matters little. You are still back in the Municipal office, every year applying for your permits. No Permits. No Race/Event!
Good discussion on this on the PTN pod.

If Ironman was to receive Euro1.6M before this shakedown then I wonder how much they have managed to negotiate with the yet to be announced host town/city for the 2027 IM70.3 world champs in $-wise America?
