Nice Mayor Says He Will Cancel 70.3 Worlds - IRONMAN Says Event Still On

Ironman needs to take them to court first. And in not privy to the cancellation clause. Do you have hard facts about what it would be?

The point is, by the time the courts have their say the damage is done. Unfortunately, this is increasingly a common tactic of politicians on the left and right.

Says the peanut gallery since 1982..What you talk about is not new, I encountered it on the 2nd race held in Kona, and every year after I raced or went to watch(another 25 times)..Of course one day you may be right, but divided by the number of years the predictors were wrong, well is that really a true prediction?

It’s not a prediction, it’s a reality.

It’s been reality for decades, race carries on.

I got an email a few hours ago from ironman saying things are on. Well of course they are going to say that. They have a contract with the City of Nice and until the City of Nice activates whatever massive cancellation clause/force majeure clause, it is technically on. As there is no force majeure, the City would have to activate a major cancellation clause. I would imagine this is substantial as Ironman customers (us) have paid entry fees and booked flights and paid for accommodations, so I would imagine Ironman has a major set of penalties on the host city for a cancellation for convenience clause so that they can absorb their hit but also compensate customers.

In my case I am not too fussed. If it gets cancelled, i am going on vacation in Antibes and Nice for 9 days anyway. So for me it’s in the category of “nothing to worry about”.

Exactly. None of this illegal stuff has stopped populists from doing weird stuff like… I dunno tariffing everything in the world everywhere collecting billions in taxes, then a year later claiming you can’t figure out how to refund it back when the courts slap you down.

The reality is, Ironman can lawyer up and go against Nice or negotiate or walk away. But if Nice is actually playing for keeps the event doesn’t happen and Ironman is in limbo either way. If the mayor is making this a political football it’s not like he can’t make good on his promise to cancel the event. People are gonna notice.

Maybe he can claim the courts tied his back if there’s some emergency injunction process. Maybe he gets to renegotiate some savings and that’s all this is.

But it’s in every interest of Ironman to say nothing to see here, when this is potentially a massive issue.

yeah, I mean what the heck else are they going to say. Of course the official line is still on, right up until the point it’s not.

Thanks for a quick reaction @Ironmandad
