News website without annoying pop-ups? And a thanks to Slowman

For years I’ve kept Yahoo as my home page to see what is going on in the world. I’m at the point where I would like to find another (mostly neutral) website. Every page loads slow because of all the videos and ads that auto-load. I’ve been tolerating it for a while, but I’ve had enough. I’ve tried different browsers and even tried blocking auto-start on videos.

Does anyone know of a neutral website that doesn’t blast you with ads?

On a similar note. I would like to thank Slowman for giving us a website to use that doesn’t inundate us with ads. I belong to a regional outdoor forum and you can’t read a thread without first having to wait for an ad to load. Often you click to view a page and you get nothing but an ad. The ads on ST are present but never bothersome. So, Thank you Dan for providing ST to us as you do.

I use Real Clear Politics, but I also have AdBlockPlus on Firefox installed. That said when I occasionally hit USA Today it doesn’t matter it blasts me with pop ups. RCP gives me no pop ups.

I use google news. Granted they are headlines that jump off into these various sites but I find the headlines are enough to give me an idea as to what is happening. Topics that I want to read about are tolerable on those sites because I’ve selected them to read.

Google News.

I get my news from the LR.

Yep.
That’s your best option.

+1 (edit: actually +2)

Seriously. Like the OP I cannot stand the videos and ads on all sites. Following sports has become a pain because both yahoo and espn have videos pop up. Many days I just figure that if something important has happened, I’ll find it here.

PC - The Economist (paid site) and Google News (an amalgamation system)

Tablet & Phone - BBC News App. Excellent global coverage compared to US sources, less ‘Info-Tainment’ (Bieber is dating Miley!), more objective and neutral reporting.

https://news.google.com/ (I think) …

Annoying pop-ups, are a so 2010 I use Chrome, with the Ad-block extension added in. I don’t see pop ups. occasionally piss people off cause I send them to a site loaded with them, but I don’t know that.

You can selectively turn it off, so Slowtwitch.com’s ad’s can be served to you. (I tried per Dan’s request once) but there was some annoying moving ad bugging me so the filter went back up.

Does it stop the auto-start videos too? If I go to Yahoo news and scroll down, there will almost always be a small video playing somewhere on the screen.

I can’t read a simple sports article without it trying to show a dozen video clips of every amazing play of the day. I guess they think that everyone wants to see videos instead of reading an article.

Thanks to all those who recommended Google News. I like it.

I’ll second BBC. Seems neutral, with thorough coverage.

No, just went to Yahoo News website… It sucks

Smart news app.
